Default Size Matters

http://www.ukip.org/ukip_news/gen12.php?t=1&id=2400
Quote:
According to the Royal Mail, size does matter. The trouble is, you don't know how big it is!

If you don't know your millimetres from your millipedes and a gram from your gran then sending a letter may turn into a nightmare.

New rules on the price of posting a letter have sneaked in yet more European standardisation, with the categories on size and weight only being available in millimetres and grams.

UKIP's Nigel Farage MEP commented on the new rules, saying "A trip to the post office will be like being on Countdown where Carol Vorderman says "think of a number" and there will be a 'guess your weight' machine in the corner."

He added: "It's ridiculous, when the vast majority of people in this country use pounds, ounces and inches, that the post office should impose these measures. This is yet another example of creeping European standardisation forced on us by this ridiculous Gvernment."

Rules governing postal services in the European Union lay out the categories for weights, but do not say anything about dimensions.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "This is how it all works now", and blamed the lack of imperial measurements on "European Union legislation".

Mr Farage added: "This Government is guilty of pushing the Euro agenda onto us but is failing to take any responsibility. Isn't it about time they admitted their intentions to take us further into the European Union, instead of cheating the British public?".

Notes

The directive governing postal services is 2002/39/EC and can be found at:

When I did my 6months stint in Birmingham as Office Manager I tried to get UKIP to appreciate this regulation was coming and to make sure all our correspondence was produced in the most economical size.
As you might guess nobody listened as tihs sort of detail was boring and attention to detail in the UKIP hierarchy non existant.

Most UKIP documentation is produced in A4 is it not ? A4 folded once becomes A5 .So where is the (your) or UKIP's problem.
The membership cards/letters for example are A4 and can be folded once to A5 or twice to DL.
The uninformed membership might be led by you into thinking there is a problem ----------is there?

I think independence news is the only thing I get that isn't a standard envelope in size.

UKIP will have to look carefully at how these price changes will effect us.

We should look at 6-monthly issues of independence rather than quarterly. And how about asking members if they would prefer to receive by email. If we could get even 5,000 members receving it by email, that saves £5,000 for each issue (stamp, envelope, printing costs, stuffing the envelope etc)

Not insignificant!!

I've suggested asking members if they would accept and electronic copy a few times (via the site and email), but it falls on deaf ears.

4 a year? There's meant to be 6!

Emailed issues is a great idea; it's something I instatgeted to save costs when editing Guildford Opera's newsletter. Most people have colour printers these days, so hard copy for those who need it that way as well shouldn't be a problem...

Surely Independence News could be folded.

There needs to be more contact with members not less.

A hard copy, by its nature, imposes a higher editorial requirement to get things right, and where wrong the responsibility for that is clear cut.

Who in the party heirachy is Neill accusing of not listening and what hasn't been done by now that should have been done in respect of document sizing?
Sweeping criticisms are all very well but where's the substance.

nb.the new chargeing system is not yet operative.
