Accusations aside, shouldn't applications for leader of UKIP be from people that have been members for a period of LONGER than two years?

Isn't there an element of danger in allowing members with short associations to the party applying for the top job?

Personally I'm not against that idea as a general direction. Deciding the 'right' period of time would be the contentious bit, but certainly one year or longer.

I'd also suggest some requirement in terms of experience or activist activity, perhaps minimum standard would be local officer (sec, treas, Chair) or similar.

Whatever, I disagree with being parachuted in to become Chairman. IMHO a party chairman should be a longstanding member well regarded by the members - a wise and steady head, an elder statesperson of the party.

(and this is off topic, so I've split it out)

I know that was slightly off-topic, but since when can new topics be posted under other people's names without their knowledge or agreement?

I appreciate the reply, but I never posted this as a separate issue.

Or am I missing some miraculous moderator powers at work here?

sorry - but honestly, it happens more than you would realise. Just helps keep things in some semblance of order, and actually I feel your point is a good one and deserves a thread of its own!

Why not just trust democracy? Candidates have to pay £500 to stand, and they have to stand up at hustings and be grilled.

If the members want a long track record of short-sighted selfishness, they can vote for that. If the alternative is someone with a shorter record, that's the members' choice to make.

I don't see why it should be for you or anyone else to tell the members who they can or cannot elect.

Under normal circumstances I would agree. But what we have here in UKIP is quite extraordinary. Many really good people have left since the Euro Election. You have to ask yourself why??

Many of these people have said they will come back if Richard get's the Leadership, but they will not return for more of the same.

Okey dokey. I only asked the questions originally because it had been suggested by the someone that the Farage camp (allegedly) claimed Richard and one other had been BNP 'plants', so I was making the connection that this was due to Richard's relatively short association with UKIP.

So having lost on your substantive point you decided to go for the smear.

What on earth is John Page twaddling on about? What smear? I never even made a smear-like comment, just explaining to C-Steam something that C-Steam thought would make a good separate topic based on comments that I was commenting on.

So please, get off your high horse.
