Default Labour hoisted in Euro Flag row

http://www.ukip.org/ukip_news/gen12.php?t=1&id=2371
Quote:
The Government has caved in to pressure from Brussels to allow the European Union flag to be flown from every civic building in Britain.

Buried deep in a consultation document is the proposal that the ring of stars banner be recognised as a national flag to fly along side the Union Jack.

According to the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) (England) Regulations 2006 published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, Local Authority and other public buildings will no longer need planning permission to fly the Euro flag.

Until now, the only national flag allowed to fly on civil buildings without permission has been the Union Jack. While the proposed regulation would allow England's Cross of St George to be flown without permission, the Euro flag will be given the same status.

The plan drew a furious response from UK Independence Party MEP, Nigel Farage, who said: "This is yet another sneaky step to establish a national identity for a European super state against the majority wish of the people of Britain."

He accused the Government of disguising the elevation of the Euro flag as a national symbol behind the popular revival of England's own national flag seen during the World Cup last month.

"This is yet another example of how this government is dragging us further and further into a federal Europe" added Mr Farage. "We already have the EU flag on our driving licenses and our car number plates - where is the popular will for this? It raises the spectre that even the Queen may be pressured to fly the Euro flag from Buckingham Palace."

He added: "The EU has its own anthem and currency, yet as far as I am aware, there is no country called 'Europe'. How can it be acceptable that it flies its flag in our country as if it were its own?"

Notes:

The proposal can be found at:

http://www.communities.gov.uk/pub/76..._id1501764.pdf

which states that:

National Flags – Schedule 1, Class H

Adopt the new proposal that as well as national flags being flown without having to apply for consent, the European flag should also be included in Class H.

It would have been nice if the leader had made the statement, along with the immigration release.

I guess the defacto leader is taking time out from holidaying to start ramping up his leadership challenge.

I guess the government aren't the only ones who hide things.

But the inclusion of the provision for the flying of EU flag has drawn criticism from Euro-sceptics, who accuse the government of "caving in" to pressure from Brussels to pave the way for the continental flag to be flown at British civic buildings.

"This is yet another sneaky step to establish a national identity for a European superstate against the majority wish of the people of Britain," UK Independence party (Ukip) leader Nigel Farage said.

"This is yet another example of how this government is dragging us further and further into a federal Europe" he added
