we need to make policy in a much more considered manor.

Exactly. The only consideration so far for moral issues, is the party says people should get a referendum on the issue if they want it.

I think that one is going to take some beating.

And all those people with terminal illnesses that might be cured by stem cell research will look at UKIP if we oppose this research and loath us!

It's why I would vote no to it being banned in a referendum.

This is too serious an issue for an opportunistic kneejerk reaction.

I think that this approach is one that we can live with

EU holds democracy in contempt

By passing the 7th Framework Directive, the European parliament today has shown disregard for democracy and its own concept of subsidiarity said Dr Hans Blokland, vice chairman of the EPs Environment Committee.

"Embryonic stem cell research is forbidden in some member states after democratic debates and votes. However due to this legislation those countries will be forced to contribute financially to research which is prohibited in their own country". He went on "The decision whether or not to subsidise embryonic stem cell research is a clear example of a topic that should be left to the member states to decide".

Dr Blokland is deeply disappointed with his MEP colleagues who have been so cavalier in their approach to the principle that on moral or ethical issues countries should be forced to contribute in this way. Worse he said, "there are already different procedures that can be used that would not create this moral dilemma". He called on colleagues to vote in favour of alternatives for embryonic stem cell research, which can be found in adult stem cell research and research with blood from the umbilical cord.
