MEP slates EEDA for funding 'sexist' business programme

Jeffrey Titford, the UK Independence Party MEP for the East of England has strongly criticised the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) for funding and publicly supporting a ‘sexist’ business development programme.
The programme, 'Enterprising Women', specifically singles out women in the East of England who run their own businesses. It offers women-only seminars and training courses, all of which are presented by women and are free of charge.
Mr Titford said: “Reading through material on the internet about Enterprising Women, I was quite shocked by the overt sexism of the programme, which deliberately excludes men. Men are not even allowed to present the seminars! One of our members telephoned EEDA to query all this and was informed that there was no equivalent programme aimed at men, though men could also apply to Enterprising Women. A subsequent telephone call to Enterprising Women itself soon blew a hole in that idea as they made it clear that their organisation is for women only.
“This is crude sexism and, in this day and age, it is quite improper for a taxpayer funded organisation like EEDA to be sponsoring such an organisation. They urgently need to rethink this, before it is challenged under the Sex Discrimination Act. Supporting entrepreneurship in East Anglia is very important but it should never be based on gender prejudice”.
