Agreed! Best for the job should be chosen regardless.

Doesn't the 'Leader' put his pals to the top of the list? Its who you know not what you know!

The problem is that there are not that many women activists in any party. Until there are more it will be difficult to find women candidates.

Before talking about representation from women or ethnic minorities you need to have a significant number of them who are activists.

At the last General Election in South Essex 3 of the 7 candidates were women. There were no quotas or anything silly, it was just that they offered and the Party willingly accepted them.

In some situations, and I suspect the Tory party is one of them, there are a large number of active women. If a selection process is necessary, women tend to prefer men candidates for the simple reason they would rather be dominated by a man than another woman.

UKIP doesn't have a problem yet.

On the question of selecting candidates for the EU, that is a matter that needs a complete re-appraisal. We can't have the same system as last time. Before selecting them the Party also has to decide what it expects of them. We can't have a repeat situation where the MEPs tell us what we are going to get. Now that is a real problem for UKIP that might be suitably aired at the hustings meetings.

With his colour based racist sexist and ageist sterotyping statement maybe Basildon Boy would be more comfortable in other parties .... or does he know something we dont ....like Knapman is going to put one his Polish serfs up for the MEP list in the interests of "diversity".

The only qualification I am looking for in an MEP, is how do they come across as a person to the media. I think she would do quite well on that front.
I think she would be excellent. She seems to be pretty versatile and those who've met her say she's very switched on and an engaging personality.

Default the person, not there ethnicity

surely it is whether the person is capable of doing the job well, and not whether they fulfil certain racism and sexism criteria.

Kernow and Andy Pandy are right. Tokenism is patronising, and I like to feel that I am a member of a party that is above such things. Women and members of minorities of any sort are quite capable of getting there under their own steam, lets not insult them by even suggesting Lab/Con style 'lists'.

Absolute rubbish as far as MEP's are concerned.

MEP's. The rules governing selection is based on a political party's members votes which determine the ranking.

MP's however in some parties could be Leader chosen, especially where the local constiuency party was weak. Even Cameron is having some difficulty in getting his ' A ' list to stick.
