Default UKIP: Cameron is cut adrift on Europe

Politics.co.uk
Quote:
The UK Independence party (Ukip) has said David Cameron's announcement to delay the Conservative withdrawal from the European People's party (EPP) showed he was "cut adrift" from half of his MEPs.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Ukip in the European parliament, said: “Pledging to withdraw from the EPP was clearly nothing more than a sharp PR move by someone whom the term ‘slick’ could have been invented to describe.

"It was this, his sole promise, which gained him the leadership of his party."

He said Tory MEPs wishing to sit in a “genuine eurosceptic group” would be welcomed within the Independence and Democracy group of which Ukip is a member.

"Those who support a federal Europe can happily remain within the federalist EPP group," he added.

"In 2009, voters will be able to judge their Eurosceptic credentials by their actions in the wake of Cameron's failure to honour his promise.”

Mr Cameron is not yet out of the wood. As the Bromley byelection showed, Ukip is nibbling at the Tory vote and some disappointed Euro-sceptic MEPs and MPs may ignore the praise heaped on the leader's plan .

All good stuff which I hope continues, but will EU Sceptic Tories really leave a party which will probably win the next General election? I doubt it!

The Tories will probably win the General Election in 2009, but lose MEPs in the 2009 EU Elections.

There is nothing to suggest a Tory victory at the next election. Most polls show a tiny Labour majority or hung parliament with Labour 3-15 seats short of a majority.

The fact you can make that statement (and it is true), after all the **** ups, damage and corruption Labour have commited, says it all about the current Conservative party.
