Default UK eurosceptics 'should join UKIP' - Caroline Jackson MEP

UK eurosceptics 'should join UKIP'

British eurosceptics who do not accept the Conservative party’s decision to stay in the EPP-ED should go to UKIP, a senior UK MEP has declared.

Caroline Jackson’s assertion follows Thursday’s decision to keep the UK Conservatives in the EPP-ED grouping until 2009.

“To those who wish to leave the party I say, I hope they will do so. They would feel more comfortable with UKIP,” Jackson told this website.

Jackson has made no secret of her wish to remain part of the EPP-ED - the biggest parliamentary grouping - and to push for reform from within.

And she has slammed party leader David Cameron for succumbing to eurosceptic pressure and pledging to pull out.

“Cameron needs to learn a lot more about EU politics. This is a very considerable climb down,” she insisted.

“It will not be possible to pull out of the EPP-ED in 2009 if it has not proved possible now.”

Failed negotiations

Following months of negotiations, Conservative MEPs have failed to find suitable allies for their proposed new centre right group.

But Cameron insists his plans will go ahead in 2009 - when the Czech centre right Civic Democratic Party (ODS) will be ready to come on board.

But it is unclear what will happen to his 26 MEPs in the mean time.

While Jackson et al are eager to maintain good relations with the EPP-ED, others are outraged at being forced to cohabit with federalists and EU enthusiasts.

“The point is we disagree fundamentally with the European parties of the EPP,” Martin Callanan MEP told theparliament.com.

Callanan says it is time to form a new political body that is more like-minded on enlargement and rejecting plans for the EU constitution.

Sources close to the UK Conservatives in Brussels note that “the majority of right wingers did not turn up” to listen to Cameron’s announcement on Thursday.

Daniel Hannan MEP was noted for his absence.

Hannan has apparantly claimed he will leave the party if the decision to stay in the EPP-ED is taken.

Awkward divorce

With the European party so irrevocably split, Jackson says she has resigned herself to years of ill-feeling between British Conservatives and their European counterparts.

“We are now in a situation where we have said to our partner ‘we want a divorce’ – but we are staying in the same house and using the same kitchen,” she declared.

“That is an incredibly awkward position to be in.”

The eurosceptics in the Conservative party have been made to look like fools.

How much more of this are they going to take?

Q:When will Tory eurosceptics join UKIP?
A: When UKIP offers a full, positive, progressive agenda.

Why leave a political party to join a pressure group?

Lots unless they are offered a viable alternative. We can be that alternative.

I agree about the joining UKIP bit.

But how can people follow a man, who has gone back on his single promise to them. He is a liar and a spin merchant. He is worse than Blair.

The only reason I can now see for being part of the Tories, is to undermine him and make him fail.

I fear not even then. The first priority of any member of the professional political class is a safe seat and a secure income. Tory MPs and MEPs will always put this before principle. Those with the semblance of a conscience can always rely on self-delusion to convince themselves that they are working on the inside to bring about a Damascene conversion in the Tory party. Those of us in the real world know it is never going to happen.

I totally agree about MP's, but for MEP's they could have a real chance of taking a stand and winning relection with a reformed UKIP.

Step one is to attract the grassroots, the members and activists. UKIP has a long, long way to go, even with progressive change to appeal to a standing mp.

However, the internal change must come first before we can even begin to dream of that day when an MP could consider defecting and retaining their seat.

I agree that we are along way from attracting any mps to our party.
But if I was a tory eu sceptic and was having to sit with the EPP for another 3 years I would be extremlly embarassed.
Their only option is to join UKIP now then they will 3 years to help us broaden our policies and ensure that they are re-elected under a UKIP banner.
Nigel is looking for a 100% increase in meps after the 2009 euro elections we must move fast if we are to achieve this.
Just a question too why is Daniel Hannan still with the tories surely he would be much more at home with UKIP

Well he said he was going to leave if they didn't pull out, so now we will find what kind of substance he really is made of. I hope he doesn't do a Cameron and prove to be a liar.

I am sure he would be a welcome addition to UKIP and that he would have a real chance of retaining his MEP status, if that is what he wants in a future election.

He could chose to be an independent, afterall, Ashley Mote still seems to have some effect in that role.
