I have had a response from Gary Duffy, UK Editor, BBC News website.
" We intend to publish a profile of the 4 contenders, an explanation of the election process, and a profile of UKIP within the next few days. Further news coverage will be on merit" Cant say fairer than that. Have also had answer from my e-mail to Michael Grade. It is a stock answer but one fact to pick out is that comments are circulated to all senior managers so that the more e-mails sent to him then the more likely are the senior managers be of our election. Precis of reply " Michael Grade gets far too many e-mails to reply personally but all correspondence is forwarded to the BBC information dept for reply. Jonathan Dunlop of that Dept says the BBC are impartialand will be so in respect of the UKIP leadership election. Comments are registered on a daily log which is circulated to all senior managers in the BBC " I suggest continue to e-mail michael.grade@bbc.co.uk so our views are circulated about the need to cover UKIP's election |

I have had a response from David Jordan, BBC TV , Controller Editorial policy and Chief Adviser Politics who gives an ambiguous answer but which at least recognises our existence
" The BBC will give the appropriate level of coverage to the election taking into consideration UKIP's performance in the General election, local elections , European Parliament elections, elections to the Scottish assembly, the Welsh assembly , the GLA , by-elections to those mentioned and to recent poll performances. We will be impartial in our coverage on both the network and in local output between the leadrship contests of the different political parties and also between the candidates for the leadership of UKIP" This emphasises the importance of trying to have representation at all levels of the political structure. |

Further to my previous e-mail having acknowledged and thanked David Jordan for his original response he has replied "I'll try to make sure that we do justice to the internal debate in UKIP and its significance for UK politics. I hope you will see and hear some of our coverage over the next few weeks.
You are welcome to get back in touch with any observations you may have." A very fair response, I would suggest. |

There is a convoluted and complexed formulae used by the BBC in giving the amount of air time to political parties.
It is alledgedly based on the number of votes received in previous elections and the runnimg average, as I understand, was still low as it was including 1997 results thereby lessening the affect of the 2004 European votes. I tried reading it last year during the General Election, it appeared in a national paper, totally failed to understand it. It didn't explain, to me, the air time then being given to the Respect Party (no history !) or to the Greens. |

Fair enough but the main thing is to get the BBC and other media aware of the leadership and then they might do something.
I have just had a reply from Daniel Pearl, asst Editor of Newsnight, who wasnt aware of what was happening and asked for info which I have given him. He said he would see what could be fitted in . The one thing is clear that we do need a UKIP press office , Mark C works for the MEPs group as I understand it, because you do have to go out and get in touch with people |
