Default Hustings

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how long hustings normally last - I'm quite gutted that the Midlands one is just down the road from me but I've got unchangeable plans on that very day! If it starts at 10.30 when is likely to finish by?

Thanks.

Here's the hustings announcement I've got by e-mail fwiw
Quote:
Leadership election: hustings details Dateline 11th July The period for withdrawal of candidates ended on July 10th The leadership election campaign can now start in earnest.
The candidates are: David Campbell Bannerman Nigel Farage MEP David Noakes Richard Suchorzewski

The first of the official hustings, for members in the North-west, is at the Tower College, Mill Lane, Rainhill, St Helens, Merseyside, L35 6NE, on Wednesday, July 12, starting at 7 p.m. The chairmen will be the brother and sister team of Dan and Rachel Oxley. Tower College is one mile from Junction 7 on the M62, Detailed directions can be obtained by telephoning the office of John Whittaker MEP on 01772 555975.

The second hustings in the series (for the North- east, Scotland, Yorkshire and Humberside) will be at the Scotch Corner Hotel, Scotch Corner, near Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 6NR. Scotch Corner is at the junction of the A1 and A66 roads. This meeting will start at 1 p.m. and the chairman will be regional organiser Councillor Stephen Allison. For further information contact Steve Allison on 01429 838168.

The campaign then moves south, with the Eastern Region’s hustings at the Broomfield Community Centre, Chelmsford, CM1 7AH, on Saturday, July 22. The chairman will be regional organiser Charlie Cole and he is the man to contact for further information, on 01245 440042.

On the following day, Sunday July 23, we have the Midlands (East Midlands and West Midlands) hustings in the Chase function suite of the Beefeater/Premier Travel Lodge, Longford House, Watling Street, Cannock, Staffordshire, WS11 1SJ. This is two miles from junction 12 of the M6 and is at the junction of the A5 and the A460. The chairman of this meeting will be Derek Clark MEP, and the start time is 10.30 a.m. For further information telephone West Midlands regional organiser Denis Brookes at 01630 639523.

The hustings for London and the South-east will be in the Emmanuel Hall, 9-23 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3DW on Saturday, July 29, starting at 2 p.m. The chairman will probably be London regional organiser Lawrence Webb, and further information is available from South-east regional organiser Steve Harris, telephone 01903 885 573

The final hustings in the campaign will be at St George’s Hall, George Street, Exeter, in central Exeter, on Sunday, July 30, hall available from 2 p.m. for a 2.30 p.m. start. The chairman will be the South- west’s regional organiser Malcolm Wood, who will also be the person to contact (01722 744814) for further information, such as parking facilities, disabled access, format of the meeting etc.

Ballot papers for the election will be posted to all members at the beginning of August. Last date for receipt of ballot papers is 7th September.
There is no date for the second one and no start time for the third one. God only knows who writes and reviews this stuff. Maybe the same person who thinks there's such a time as 17.00pm (see one of yesterday's leadership election announcements).

At least there are contact details for who to ask, though e-mail addresses in an e-mail announcement might have helped!

It's just not professional.

About 21/2 to 3 hours I would estimate based on 4 candidates having 12/15 mins each, then circa an hour for Q&A and up to an hour general.
Estimate.

I would suggest it will be 15 minutes each, then go home - well I hope so.

If anyone going to the hustings has a laptop with a webcam and is able to get internet access at the venue I can arrange it for a web conference of the hustings so we can all watch. And it won't cost you a penny.

Was at Rainhill last night (didn't see any videoing going on).

Went to be pursuaded in any direction and concluded that Nigel has to be the best chance for UKIP getting anywhere despite the well-rehearsed reservations that many have (including me), because crucially he has the powerful presence needed for handling a hell of a job (national media, finance, squabbles, grasp of complex detail, etc.). And as he says, he has been the one to bring big backers into the party (not just talked vaguely about fundraising).

David CB would be able to make a reasonable fist of it (or at least keeping things going I think).

Richard is OK but not in the league to handle continuous national exposure.

The other David was not in the running.

I do recommend that people go to see for themselves.

Nigel is a salesman, he was selling himself. He is not a leader.

If you are happy with the way the party is at present, then vote for Nigel. He won't do anything to make the party more electable to the British people, and as MEP, he is not doing any good here in Britain.

There is no reason why he cannot go on doing the same, appearing on the media, but he will not reverse UKIP's direction, in fact I believe things will get worse and implode under Nigel.

A lot of people resigned after the EU elections and we have stagnataed since. Who do you think is responsible for this? Most of them would come back to the party if we elect a new Leader, instead of the old cabal. I think you are just going on image and not substance.

A leader does have to be able to sell himself.

I agree that things could implode under Nigel. But that is also a high risk under other less confident leadership, or if we stagger on it will be with a similar level of profile to, say, the English Democrats (i.e. in national/international terms almost nil).

As for members returning in droves, I doubt it without some sort of high profile figure (it was the salesman RKS appearing on the scene that took the membership towards 30k).
