Default UKIP: Tories abandoning Cameron's Conservatives

The United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) has put its by-election success down to the Conservative party's abandonment of their traditional ground.

In last night's Bromley and Chislehurst election the Tories returned with a significantly reduced majority, with Ukip coming in fourth place ahead of Labour.

Ukip candidate Nigel Farage said traditional Tories were protesting against leader David Cameron’s abandonment of "whole rafts of policy", including low-taxation and support for grammar schools.

Ukip's campaign had encouraged a protest against the Conservatives, but in the last instance people voted Liberal Democrats, knowing they had more chance of winning, he told politics.co.uk.

He said Ukip would have to be a factor in all future marginal elections, adding: "As far as by-elections are concerned, we're now living in four party politics."

"I don't know the last time the governing party was put into fourth place," he added.
Interesting, It seems that Camerons Tories are losing the strongholds, yet at the same time trying to gain support in former anti-tory seats.

Default

All I saw was lazy complacent Conservatives - who knew the tory candidate was going to win anyway - staying at home and not bothering to vote.

The LibDem negative campaign only got a thousand or so extra votes compared to 2006.

Likewise with UKIPs campaign.
