Default David Campbell Bannerman running for leader

West Briton
Quote:
The uk Independence Party Chairman visited Truro to take a trip on the Truro-Falmouth branch line. David Campbell Bannerman is keeping an eye on the railway line following recent aborted plans to cut the service.

He said: "You have to be vigilant about defending these lines."

Mr Campbell Bannerman, who stood as candidate for North Cornwall in the last election, is the great nephew of the former Liberal Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell Bannerman, who led the country from 1906-1908.

"They tried to cut a lot of services - now it looks a lot better because of national pressure," he said.

Mr Campbell Bannerman confirmed that he will be contesting the leadership of UKIP, the fourth largest political party in Britain.

"I have applied for nomination papers, I am running for leader," he said.

UKIP's principal policy is to withdraw Britain from the European Union. Mr Campbell Bannerman sees his party's ideas as being particularly relevant to the people of Cornwall.

"A lot of farmers and fishermen are worried about the EU," he said.

"We get rock solid support from them and the South West deserves much more support from the government."

The politician was accompanied on his trip by Ian Proctor, UKIP Chairman of Truro and St Austell, and Bill Budge, UKIP Chairman of North Cornwall.

No clues as to Farage's running mate, then.

A potted history of DCB's political involvement:

Elections Asst to Malcolm Rifkind, 1992
Ex-Chairman, Bow Group, 1993-94
Head of Correspondence, Conservative Central Office, Euro Elections 1994
Former 'Special Advisor' to Sir Patrick Mayhew, 1996-97
Tunbridge Wells Borough Councillor, 1992-96
Ex-Conservative PPC, 1997 - Glasgow Rutherglen; 2001 - Warwick & Leamington

He floated the idea of Rail Privatisation 'as early as 1987' (local press article) and possibly lost the 2001 election (in what was traditionally a safe Tory seat) due to the negative local press on the subject. The local Tories were hunting for a new candidate in 2002...

Other 'interests':

Trainee Accountant, Bindon Hamlyn 1983-85
Account Executive, Allen, Snapey & Marsh 1985-87
Account Manager, HDM 1987
Communications Writer, 1988
Executive Director of "Vantagepoint Communications" - 1997
Communications Director/External Affairs Director, Association of Train Operating Companies - 1997-1999
Steering group member, Association of Train Operating Companies - 1999
Head of Communications, United News & Media plc 2000-2001
Member of London Safety Camera Partnership Project Board - 2001
Involved in the "Save Acton Mainline" Campaign - 2004

He stood for UKIP in North Cornwall in 2005, polling 3063 votes.

So, he went from University, to a US Business School, then Sales and Marketing via a very short stint as a trainee accountant. The CV reads like a poor copy of Cameron's.

It's interesting that he was promoting rail privatisation in the late '80s, only to appear as a member of ATOC 10 years later. You have to ask yourself whether he's experienced a Damascene conversion regarding the state of the rail industry, or whether the involvement in 'Save the X Line' campaigns is simply an effective PR exercise.

Personally, anybody involved in Safety Camera Partnership Projects is not my automatic choice for a leader of a self-government party. :?

So far, we have Farage - 'strong' SE support; Campbell-Bannerman - some Cornish support; Richardski - Wales and Dorset support and Nikki - West Midlands support. That leaves us with possible leadership candidates coming from the NW, NE, Scotland and East Midlands, plus, presumably, Ski's and Sinclaire's running mates.

This election's might turn out to be compulsive viewing, if only in a Big Brother way...

DC. Apparently not DCB. The 'bannerman' is an affectation, it is claimed.

Affectation or not, it's still his right to be "Campbell-Bannerman" 'by usage'.

I have spoken to Mr Campbell-Bannerman in private on the subject of railways and he seems genuinely pro-rail. I would say it is unlikely that his stance is a PR exercise.

I am not a supporter of his, but I do think this attack is unfounded.
