Default Leadership election approaches

Quote:
Roger Knapman became leader of the UK Independence Party in 2002, and his four-year term of office will shortly come to an end. In accordance with the constitution, a postal ballot of all members will be held to decide on his successor. A timetable has been laid down. Nomination papers are now available from the General Secretary, and have to be completed and submitted by 5pm on June 30th. Each candidacy has to be supported by 50 signatures, and is also subject to a deposit of £500. The deposit is returnable to any candidate getting more than five per cent of the votes cast.

As soon as nominations close, there will be a period (up to July 10th) to allow for withdrawals. The election campaign then gets under way, and continues until the start of balloting on August 7th. A series of hustings meetings in different parts of the country has been arranged so that members can question all the candidates. These are as follows:

July 12th - Rainhill, Merseyside
July 15th - Scotch Corner
July 22nd - Chelmsford
July 23rd - Cannock
July 29th - London
July 30th - Exeter

Ballot papers will be sent out at the beginning of August, and completed ballot papers must be returned to Head Office by 5pm on September 7th. The count will be held within the following few days.
I believe that the one in Chelmsford may be merged with the one in London, but don't quote me on that.

That would be interesting, if only because Jeffrey Titford's newsletter to East Region said the original intention had been not to hold a hustings here but he had pushed for it.

A notice listing the candidates has been put on the Party Website.

One would expect such an official important announcement to be attributed.
