John Page is just starting out
Default Is this any use?

UKIP is against police force mergers, and I assume that for some members and branches this is a live issue.

This forum sees occasional posts on this subject, but they aren't easy to retrieve.

I wondered out loud whether activists might find a focused website helpful. You greeted this idea with total apathy.

Over on the ind-uk board, Peter Troy suggested doing it as a blog, since it would be easier to set up and maintain.

http://nopolicemergers.blogspot.com/ now exists.

It is not UKIP branded, as we wanted to get it started quickly and see if there was any reaction. We also hope to attract readers who might (let's be honest) be put off by a UKIP branding.

In the words of the introductory post there

Quote:
Welcome to our blog. We oppose the principle of larger police forces. Our police need more democratic control, not less, and larger forces would be more remote.

We understand the argument that small forces may not be good at tackling large crimes. But there are other ways of tackling this besides merging forces wholesale. And most crimes are not large crimes. Most crimes are small, local crimes. Police forces need to be closer to their local communities and more accountable to them, not more remote.

We've started this blog to see if a central source of information helps in opposing the proposals. It can only be as good as its contributions, and we can't spot everything. So please comment and contribute. If you are involved in the campaigning and would like to be able to post on this blog, please get in touch.
I'm trying to do something positive here, so could I ask some questions.

1. Do you care about police force mergers? If so, are you active on the issue or a watcher? (I'm not having a pop, I just want to know.)

2. In either case, bearing in mind this is early days for the blog, will it be useful/interesting/pointless?

3. Do you see yourself visiting it?

4. Will you be prepared to contribute input to it?

5. Are you campaigning on other national issues where you might find a focused information/discussion source like the blog useful? If so, which?
