Just for fun... look at the date the article was written:
Quote:
Nigel Farage announces candidacy for Party Leader and Bromley by-election

02-06-2006
and then look at this paragraph:
Quote:
Speaking at the South East Summer Rally at the Emmanuel Hall, Westminster on Saturday (3rd June), Nigel Farage MEP, formally announced to the Party that he would be the candidate in the Bromley and Chislehurst by-election. More unexpectedly, he chose his keynote speech at the end of the rally to announce his intention to 'throw my hat in the ring' in the forthcoming Party Leadership election.
Not so unexpected by some then, especially since Steve Harris had announced Nigel's application for a pack some time ago!

Ah, so are still about Nikki!

Why was my remark unpleasant re NM ? You seem very defensive ,I`m sure Mike is perfectly capable of looking after himself .

I was simply wondering what Mike thought about Nigel`s leadership bid .
If he was wholly in favour then he might have a word in your ear .

Ok Nigel may hungry for the position and may be a control freak, but maybe the party needs a more autocratic leader to pull it up by the boot straps and move it forward.

UKIP has to build 'brand identity'. We have to get into peoples minds so that they at least consider voting for us at the next election. We can only do that by projecting an image of a party worth voting for. I think Nigel is our best media performer, he has a great political antenna and i think he gives UKIP the best chance of making some significant progress in 2009.
He's been part of the leadership for a long time and from what I can tell so far he seems to be offering more of the same.

But the party is in gradual decline and I don't think more of the same is good enough.

The question for me is, what will Nigel bring to the party as leader that he can't bring as leader of the MEPs?

I think the key question is: Is NF standing for leader for the benefit of the Party or for the benefit of himself?

The next GE might well be the last chance an anti EU party has of making an impact [8-10%] after that our membership is likely to be, as Cameron has said, no longer an issue.

It does seem as if it is dawning on even the most enthusiastic pro Europeans that the EU project is not popular with the citizens. Moves are afoot to reduce the scope of its powers. If this theme is taken up by the leaders of the major countries, which is quite possible, and this leads to reforms which remove many of the most obvious failings - it will, from thereon, be very difficult for an anti European party to succeed.

Let us hope that NF is standing for the right reasons!

Nigel Farage has the ability and charisma to be RKS without the downside.

In the past he's preferred to remain in the backround, but the party now needs to be led from the front. Ally that to the right policies and you have a winning formula.

Successful minor parties need a 'leader-cult'. On what I would term the European centre-right we have had Poujade and Fortuyn and still have Bossi and Berlusconi. We need to emulate the successes of their leader-orientated parties.

It was Paddy Pantsdown/Charles Kennedy who pushed the Lib/Dems into their present position [one we would dearly like to hold] both had a degree of charisma but more importantly a preparedness to grind, to stick at the task when it hurt.

I have no doubt NF has all of the other qualities described, but it strikes me that when the going gets tough NF is gone.

Maybe not the same downside, but certainly several others, most of which require at least an explanation.

I think that it is up to Richard Ski and others to make the points very strongly at the hustings about how we can restructure the party ,get some
fundraising for the party machine and stop the dependancy on the MEPs and on our one major donor ,to say nothing of our need for a sleaze free
party.

If something radical is not done about the party machine whoever is leader will soon be leading damn all.I believe that the membership now stands at about 14000 -I also understand that "the Polish incident "has been quoted as a reason for quite a number of resignations .

It will not be good enough to leave the party in its present state under the present team.

Petrina, As I said in a posting more than a week ago - I was going away.
In recent weeks a good deal of your posting have been about me - making various allegations yet to be substantiated or withdrawn.

UKIP or I do not revolve around you Petrina, most of my day is spent is promoting UKIP/our cause in the West Midlands.

Re all you nasty snide comments about Mike, lets look at some reality.

Mike Nattrass

Been an active euro sceptric/realist since 1994
Prominant in the West Midlands Referendum Party
Has been a substansial donator to UKIP over the years
Produced and funded all our election broadcasts since 1999 (including the famous fish slapping one used by many other tv programmes. )
Provided office space free of charge for the last two and a half years the party HQ.
NEC Member for eight years
Party Chairman for three years
Party Deputy Leader for three years
Mike encourages his staff (and provides the time) to volunteer their services to UKIP
eg myself fundraising, event organising and committee work
Denis brookes UKIP's national nominating officer and event organising
varous other members of staff take active roles - MORE THAN ANY OTHER MEP!
and so much more I could write

Petrina Holdsworth.

UKIP member since Nov'99 - Where were you in 1997 and in the lead up to the 99 euro elections?

Never a member of the South East Committee
Middle list on the Euro election candidates 2004
Elected to the NEC June 2004
Made Chairman July 2004
Resigned from both 14 months later. JUST BEFORE PARTY CONFERENCE TO GET ALL THE MEDIA ATTENTION THEN APPEAR ON TV TO CRITICISE THE LEADERSHIP. LOYALITY AND DUTY PETRINA?

donated ?

Nikki
If you think Mick Nattras is so great why not stand aside and let him stand in the leadership election?

I hope that Nigel wins too, he is by far UKIP's biggest asset.

You'll be shooting yourselves in the foot if you pick someone else. I agree though that he should not also be an MEP, but focus on building the UK side of the party.
