Default Press Release Tax Freedom Day

Tax Freedom Day:
UK Independence Party calls for
less tax, more freedom

02-06-2006

Tax Freedom Day is being celebrated tomorrow June 3rd - marking when the average earner starts to keep their income instead of giving it to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

However, this year the date is "almost as late as it has ever been", according to economist John Whittaker.

Dr Whittaker, who is the North West MEP for the UK Independence Party, warns "high taxation and over-regulation is killing our economy.

"We are paying more tax because of more Government spending. There is so much waste, particularly in public services and unnecessary Government bureaucracy," he said.

"In other countries taxes have been falling - this is not the case in Britain and we are losing our competitive edge. That is the major reason why businesses go elsewhere.

"If Britain is to remain internationally competitive we need lower taxes, less government spending, or, in short, less Government," said Dr Whittaker.

Notes:

Dr Whittaker MEP is a lecturer of Economics at Lancaster University

You will have to excuse my ignorance over this point.

What type of tax are they talking about?

Income tax?
Fuel tax?
council tax?
cigarette tax?
Road tax?
TV tax?
Sex Tax?
Health Tax?
Value added Tax?

:? :?

mmmm.

Wonder what John W has to say about the vast amounts of money wasted on irrelevant University education...

...or his money-wasting efforts at standing in half a dozen constituencies at the last election.

Not very good economics for an economist - was it?

A good question, which is answered here.

The Taxpayers Alliance gives a political perspective - an excellent read.

There's a big opening for UKIP here. We can be the only party arguing that the state must become cheaper for its citizens, allowing us to keep more of our own money.

The Taxpayers Alliance piece sums up the main economic arguments.

The time to do this is not just during an election campaign, but beforehand - repeatedly - so that people know UKIP stands for this before the campaign starts.
