Two hot potatoes.
In the paper today it was reported that 100,000 immigrants have gone onto welfare in the last four years. Don't we have enough, home-bred, scroungers to deal with? UKIP policy should be that no immigrant or foreigner, whatever their circumstances, should be allowed a single benefit, including housing, for five years, when they can apply for citizenship. Everyone wishing to stay here, even asylumists, should work, and should have to get private health insurance. Is that fair? Yes. Would it be popular? Definitely. |

"We will maintain the honourable British tradition of offering political asylum for genuine refugees. " http://www.ukip.org/index.php?menu=f...=fivefreedoms3 We can not therefore say that if they can not get a job or a sick they should starve. Although we could (and should) say that before they get citizenship they must have paid more in taxes than they received in benefits.

As for the policy of giving sanctuary to "genuine asylum seekers", that's just parroting the orthodox, unworkable current line. The UN charter was made in a different age when refugee numbers were tiny compared to today's numbers. Millions, literally dozens of millions of Africans from places such as Darfur, Chad and Somalia are genuine refugees, but I don't want them settling in the UK. So what's the difference between someone fleeing war and an economic migrant moving because he wants to make a buck for his family living in a shantytown? If anything I'd rather them than an asylum seeker, who often come from societies steeped in violence. Wait until riots break out between West Indian-Brits and Somalians, as they no doubt will, and we'll see what that particular civil war has done to south-east London. And another difference between an asylum seeker and an economic migrant is the former demand benefits, and since they're not allowed to work legally, there's not much we can do. We're priviliged to be on this life boat, but we made it, and if we take any more stragglers we're all going to drown. |

E.G. If somebody is a decent person and they have a legitimate reason for seeking asylum in the United Kingdom and they are willing to respect UK laws and traditions and they can not work and they need state aid e.g. a Woman with a young child, they should have it. On the other-hand there should be secure fenced guarded detention camps for people entering the United Kingdom that can not prove that they will respect UK laws and traditions and who are seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, which they can leave if they wish to return to the country they came from. Furthermore French and Belgian passport holders seeking to enter the United Kingdom should be required to obtain a Visa before doing so. As for scroungers, you would be better off starting with John Prescott, Ruth Kelly and Peter Hain. Best and Warm Regards Adrian Wainer |
