Default UKIP slams EU racism

Derek Clark MEP, who represents the East Midlands, today (31.5.06) slammed the European Parliament for what he called "disgraceful behaviour", when it refused to allow a group of 50 Sikhs into the Parliament building.

The group, who were visiting the Parliament to lobby on behalf of their right to wear their religious insignia, which includes a ceremonial dagger, had been told that there would be no problems in accessing the building.

"However, when they arrived, they were denied access due to a rule change at 8pm last night", said Mr Clark. "Many of the group are elderly and they were kept in an area with no seats, no refreshments and, most importantly, no toilet facilities, for four hours". He continued: "Even when they requested a security escort to allow them to relieve themselves, this was refused".

Mr Clark said: "I will be writing in the strongest terms to the President of the European Parliament, protesting at what seems quite apparently to be racist behaviour on the part of the European Parliament and demanding an apology to the Sikh community".

Notes:

The Sikh Freedom Lobby in the European Parliament was organised by the Sikh Federation (UK) and included Sikhs from the UK, France, Germany, Holland and Belgium.

I suppose it's alright for people to be arrested and put in gaol for about 5 years for carrying daggers, but to exempt Sikhs, then?

I thought it was knives are outlawed rather than daggers?

A dagger is a knife! Unlike some other knives, like fisherman's knivers, diver's knives, the dagger has one purpose though, violence against others. It ain't used for cutting bread, fish, meat, rope, but people.

Yup - I was being facetious, just for the hell of it.
In an irritable mood today for some reason.

Hmm ... while innocent citizens are not permitted daggers, the folks employed to do our head monkeys' bidding are still allowed, indeed, expected to "Fix bayonets" I assume?

I find it somewhat alarming that the people of this country are not permitted to defend themselves while those against whom we need to defend ourselves are not brought to justice.

The revolution is long overdue methinks ...

That's it - the irritability I feel is identified.
It is no more than frustrated dissent.
I will relieve it in my usual manner ...

What annoys me is that this story has nothing to do with racism at all. This is a story about a foreign religion (which I respect) which requires its followers (male) to carry dangerous weapons (daggers)

UKIP are acting like extreme left wing morons calling this racism, when in fact it is about carrying weapons and foreign cultures and customs.

UKIP supposedly stand for having UK laws, not foreign laws, yet here you are defending a foreign religious culture in carrying daggers, where a British person would be arrested for carrying one.

You couldn't make it up!

I agree ... though to be sure, I'd like to know under what last-minute rule they were denied access?

Can not Sikhs' daggers be described as 'ceremonial' or part of a 'uniform' as per the Scottish weapons?

It is unlikely that whatever motivated this was "racism". Surely they could have left their daggers outside. They wouldn't be allowed on a plane with daggers presumably.
