I have suggested this many times. Why are we not already using Direct Debit to collect memebership fees and donations? It seems silly not to.

Why do we think peoples memberships lapse? some actively dont want to renew and others cant be bothered or forget. Lets make it DD and force people to actively leave if they wish but not allow them to drop off through wastage.
Is it possible that the current leadership do not want the membership to provide the bulk of the finance for the Party and that they would prefer a single large donor. It has become the way of both Labour & Tories to rely on big donors who also provide large loans to the party. In this way the leadership need concern themselves mainly with the wishes of these donors and far less the membership? A much easier task.

Many members use a Standing Order to pay their memberships ... sure you'd like to know that.

For all practical purposes that works as well as a direct debit.

It was the £5 pm part which added the extra something. 15,000 members @ £20 pa = £300,000: 15,000 members @ £5 pm = £900,000.

Also H.A point about lapsed memberships

Recruiting new members could be difficult for £5 per month/£60 per year. Persuading people to renew their membership would also become harder. £5 per month doesn't seem so much for just one person - what about families where 2,3 or 4 people are party members?

I don't think this scheme would generate £600,000 of extra income for the party, and it runs the risk of generating a decline in membership.

Yes I agree - it would be much less - but much more than what £20 pa brings in. The Labour Party run a graduated scheme, membership depends on how much you earn. I do not think that would work for UKIP - but with the Labour Party £5 is the fee for an average earner.

Why should Labour Party members be so much more devoted than UKIP members - you would think the reverse would be true. Provided you allowed a concessionary fee for those who could not afford the £5 pm, I do not think you would lose many members and those you kept would be serious in their convictions.

Perhaps a more important issue is that, if the membership do fund the Party, they have every right to expect their views to be listened to by the leadership and maybe the leadership would be more willing to do so. It does not take long, when reading this forum, to realise this is the great bone of contention with the activists.
