Have you seen this?

Quote:
The UK Independence Party believes unreservedly in our institutions – our democratically elected House of Commons, our constitutional monarchy, our system of common law and our House of Lords. These institutions deserve our respect not just because they define our system of government but also because they are part of what is British. The Lords, in particular, continue to show their worth in pointing out flaws in draft legislation and performing a check on the Commons.

The Labour government, however, has clearly found the interference by the Lords in the legislative process to be irksome and has sought to diminish its powers. UKIP would resist any further dilution and is not convinced by proposals to include a proportion of elected members. The virtue of the Lords is their independence from the government and this would be reduced if they had to seek re-election.

It's a bit vague, but you could try writing to UKIP HQ to see if you can draw out a clearer position.

The problem is that the House of Lords worked reasonably well and Nu Labour 'reformed' it, without having any clear idea of what to reform it into. Hence the People's Peers and the deal where there were some hereditary peers and all the rest. They've since highlighted the mess with the cash for peerages scandal.

I don't think any party has a clear idea of how to reform the House of Lords satisfactorily. It's a can of worms that shouldn't have been opened.

From what I'm hearing, this may all be about to change.

I believe PR could be put forward for an elected Lords bu UKIP soon.

I'm going ot need some convincing as to whether I agree with that or not.

Elected by the same people who elected Labour 3 times in a row? I don't agree with this. The House of Lords before reform wasn't perfect but it was a very necessary brake on the Commons. Even now I think it's standing up for the people against the government.

Perhaps UKIP needs to educate the voters about our constitution a little more?

A good point. Most people do not understand the construction of the constitution. I am not an expert but most people do not realise they are sovereign.

Does anyone have a brief article about the makeup of our constitution that could be used for a basis of a handout?

I agree. PR for the Lords is the best option, but it has to be done right. Perhaps the PR lords would have limited control to stop or delay bills, and have limited right to introduce bills.

The Lords, with a majority vote of 2/3, could also have the right to recall the Commons. We could have done with between 1992 and 1997 rather than endure that lame duck government.
