Why?
Nikki, I don't know the truth of any of the rumours about your sexuality. I don't care, but sadly our society is not free of petty prejudices and many will. I have no problem with you fulfilling any other role within the party, but I genuinely think that, in these spin conscious times, the press would make more of your personal image than of the policies that you support. I'm being harsh, but fair. I do not doubt you have the necessary skills to lead, but look at how the press has behaved over RKS, Tom Wise, Roger Knapman etc. Likewise I think you are a strong personality, although we have only met once, but do you think you are ready for the opprobrium that some will throw in your direction? If we are to retain seats at the next Euro elections and to make our mark in future local and Parliamentary elections we have to shed certain aspects of our image. Sadly we need a less colourful figure to lead us in order that we don't alienate large sections of the grey vote (that is the people who are going to vote at all). Roger Knapman is the sort of bloke you could take round to your gran's for tea, Petrina is the sort of lady you could introduce to your mother. Farage has a certain charm. You have an individual appeal, but I don't think it will go down with the people we have to convince. As I said, I don't care. I want the best person for the job, but that's not how the political world works. IMHO |

Still, I suppose it may get UKIP some 'gay-friendly' publicity during the campaign. It's supposed to be good for political 'street cred', so they tell me. |

I would say that a substantial number of UKIP members would not want a homosexual or lesbian as party leader.
I know two very senior members who virtually foam at the mouth when the the word 'gay' is mentioned. I briefly became a target of this when - for once displaying my 'liberal' credentials - I said to one of these gentlemen 'they're not all bad you know'. The age/social 'profile' of those who tend to be attracted to UKIP would not suggest a positive reaction. Anyway, it's an unnecessary distraction. Would we want to elect a 2 foot tall dwarf or the fattest man in the world (not me!!) to be leader? We might feel sorry for these people and get some kind of PC kick out of telling them they're just the same as the rest of us, but the great unwashed would die laughing. No oddballs please. UKIP needs an established and reasonably well-heeled professional middle-aged heterosexual man or woman with sound traditionalist views on everything from religion to immigration. That's the kind of person most decent electors would like to identify with. PS What happened to Nikki Sinclaire after she was arrested for gatecrashing (gaycrashing?) some homosexual meeting in Birmingham? If one requires proof that not all publicity is good publicity - there it is. |

In other words, sex, age, orientation matters not. All may be dragged through the mud with full equality, if they put themselves in a position to invite such. |

Some women find it attractive too - well obviously. So, like it or not, a reputation as an amateur swordsman can actually enhance the standing of a male politician. Never works for women, I'm afraid. It didn't work for Mark Oaten either. |
