I don't think UKIP has ever supported 'free trade' - it supports trading arrangements with just about anyone else but that is not quite the same thing.

Free trade may be a reasonable general principle but it certainly should not be applied blindly to all situations. To my mind free trade needs to include the option to not trade (or at least to put up tariff or other barriers) when that is judged to be for the good of the UK (as the USA does).

Default Buy British

For what it is worth, we are taking delivery of a brand new Nissan Micra in 3 weeks. Yes, the car is manufactured by a Japanese company, but that company makes this particular car at Europe's most efficient car plant - Sunderland.

The choice was not in itself that easy, as a number of factors were considered, but in the end, the sheer cutiness of the beast coupled with a glowing report on the car by motoring medias, owners and other sources only added to the idea of owning a British (or should I say ENGLISH) made car that is actually well made, reliable and safe, tipped the balance in its favour.

Please, I DO NOT want to hear off people that had a bad time with this car, as it wil only dent my motivation to keep other Brits in jobs. As I do with almost anything I buy, I try my best to find out either where it was made, or where the bits and pieces were sourced from. Not always successful, but the heart is in the right place.

I once had an interesting discussion with a prospective milk man trying to woo us over as new customers, and asked him why should I buy his expensive milk when I can buy cheaper British milk at the supermarket (in a devils advocate sort of way). He basically replied that supermarkets cannot be relied upon to supply British milk and said that we would be supporting local British workers. I then asked him what sort of car he drove, and where he took his holidays, since they involved expenses vastly greater than anything I could contribute to the dairy industry. He got quite irate when he said it was a Volvo, as he clearly knew where I was coming from. The discussion died rapidly after that.

No need for all that research - it's already done...

If you don't mind sending your money north or the border, go Demon.
If you want your money to stay in England, go Zen.

Definetly transporting food here produces loads of CO2, sadly I don't think friends of the earth would back us - but if they don't I will resign.

Default support british industry !!!!

We shouId if we can buy British and be proud of it.
I see that we do not make very much after the devastation of the last thirty years of government policy.

I do not mean British at any cost or if the product is rubbish -but I mean it frustrates me when I see police forces ordering BMW or whatever when something at least partly British couId have been obtained, even now rover dealers have stock that public services couId use.

also to a different customer there are uk producers still who shine like Triumph motorcycles and Bristol cars. we need a hundred companies like these and at wider price points.

sometimes we are trading on the heritage ticket and why not.

to me having a fine and viable manufacturing industry is part and parcel of being a patriot.

the foreign ownership of all and sundry disturbs me greatly, I want a UKIP that will act to reverse the "lets become a service industry nation" mind set. anyone agree ?

Not 100%.

I believe UKIP should promote free trade, but at the same time, when it is wise to do so, promote British industry.

For example, we should 100% back locally produced food products. It makes sense on so many levels.

At the end of the day though, I don't think we should force anyone, to do anything. It's a free country, is it not.
