Default A Big Thank You to All Our Candidates

The UK Independence Party would like to thank all of those members who stood for UKIP at last night's local elections, and those activists who helped campaign. Our congratulations go to Steve Allison, who won the St.Hilda ward in Hartlepool and becomes UKIP's newest councillor.

Although the first past the post electoral system makes it difficult to break the mould of Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat victories, there was an encouraging number of second-place finishes, and other wards in which UKIP beat at least one of Labour, Conservatives and Lib Dems. The results give the lie to the claim that UKIP take predominantly Conservative votes, with Labour and Liberal Democrats suffering the most, where UKIP fielded candidates - proving that we are far more than just a Party of disaffected Conservatives.

However, the campaign is not all good news. We need to learn the lessons of Thursday night's election results and be ruthless in our targeting of promising areas, if we are to make substantial gains next year.

Party Leader, Roger Knapman MEP said: "This year was a warm up for UKIP for the elections in 2007, where UKIP is contesting its stronger areas, and where there are twice as many seats up for election. I congratulate all our candidates for having the courage to put their names forward and for their efforts during the campaign."

UKIP Local Elections co-ordinator Jonathan Arnott said: "This year's results give us a solid platform to build on for next year, with a number of second-place finishes to add to Steve Allison's excellent victory in Hartlepool. At these elections, we stood for the first time in many seats. The groundwork has been laid; next year's campaign starts now."

They were particulary referring to those who were candidates or who got stuck into the campaign.
