Default Offshore prisons

Prisons in the UK will soon be full and the cost of housing a prisoner per year is reported to be £36-37 K.
Therefore assuming that the death penalty is not to be reintroduced, wouldn't it be a good idea for prisoners who are not going to be released or will be deported on released to housed offshore ?
Ie some 3rd world country can bid to look after them based on cheaper wage and land costs. It is very probable that eg Bolivia could lock up Ian Huntley for 10K p.a the savings could be spent on rehablitating criminals who will be released (eg education for the illiterate etc) or on cancer drugs.

Even if we were to spend £4 K to pay for people to visit a prisoner per year we would still save £22 K.

About 10% of criminals are meant to be non UK nationals and so presumably will be deported on release so there is scope for a big savings here.

We could just announce via a bids to tender like all contracting.

Austria is 'offshoring' some of its criminal with romanian background to Romania. They are funding one or two prisons there.

But why should we just offshore foreign criminals. I really can't understand why if eg the Bolivian government could look after Ian Huntley for 12K p.a they shouldn't.

Well because it has a lot of implications - for example the target country must agree and it will be not so simple to get their approval I bet. And what if one of UK inmates get hurt there for example during some riot? What if they catch some disease because of bad food?

And remember it could be exploitable. Maybe I'm only a bit overreacted because in former Czechoslovakia many thousands of citizens were deported to Soviet lagers against their will and in facto even against Czechoslovak communistic laws.

And pardon my ignorance who is Ian Huntley? Murderer?

If buiding more prisons is the answer to our increasing population we have a problem.

The answer to an increasing prison population is a reduction in crime while at the same time seeking alternatives to prison as a deterent from crime. Imprisonment doesn't work - if it did, we'd not have such a high prison population and we'd not have so many inhabitants returning again and again.

Blair promised to get tough on crime and the causes of crime - two promises in one, both of which have been broken.

If more prison building is deemed necessary I'd strongly oppose them being the private sector.

Thought that's what Australia was for?

Sorry, I'm now contrite.

.......'cos then they learned how to play cricket & tennis, develope a democracy, deal with immigration, not lose their sovereignity and trade worldwide. Also understanding that their people and country are important. Unfortunately they have yet to learn to be sportsmen/women when they lose.

However as they win so often perhaps that may be looked upon as ..well..err not very British.

The Finnish Nationalist party which has MP's in parliament wants to send Finnish criminals to Russian Labour camps.
I however think all criminals of foreign stock should be imprisoned abroad but British prisoners should be used in Labour camps on 900 Calorie a day diets which would cost a fraction of what we now pay to run prisons.

Ian Huntely murdered two 10 year old girls.

Of course this is only possible if the host country agrees, although as a lot of countries in the world sadly have high unemployment that should not be too difficult.

By definition prison can always be exploitable, however these people would still be allowed to phone home etc.
I think that as sadly this will be a growth industry for some time (don't forget if the host country is successful there will be opportunities to do the same for the US) that the prisoners will be looked after very well. Possibly too well for some people.
