[quote="Britannist"]. . UKIP should put up the required number of candidates (‘paper’ candidates) to get a party election broadcast. quote]

Simple really, isn't it :?:
As I have asked many times in different sections of this forum, what exactly do we use for money :?:
Paper candidates still cost £500 each - a complete & utter waste of money, which could be beter used in targetted seats, IMO.

We should have a candidate in every seat, even if paper candidates, simply because we need to give people a chance to vote UKIP. Without that sort of general recognition candidates in "target" seats will be held back in any case.

In addition to ensuring the party political broadcast/s, the £500 deposits bring free postage to every address in a constituency (typically 40000 addresses) - it's a bargain!

In the 2005 GE, UKIP lost their Deposits in 450+seats, amounting to over £225,000, no doubt mostly "paper candidates" Some Bargain :!: :!:

£225,000 is a lot of money but not that great to get a message to every voter's address in the country. Billboards cost a lot of money also. So do regional organisers, etc.

The problem in 2005 is that the people weren't interested at that time in our message. Should we just give up and save all our money?

No,of course we shouldn't give up. but either we didn't have enough money to fight the 2005 GE or we didn't use it to our best advantage.
The next GE is in 2009 or maybe a lot sooner, are we ready financially ? I would doubt it.
After the election of the new leader, UKIP's top priority MUST BE to procure a Professional Fundraiser from the UK, America. Australia, it doesn't matter where, possibly working on a percentage of what he/she raises.
I worry that if a snap election is called in the next 18 months or 2 years say, we will be unable to compete effectively through lack of funds.
It's All about money.

The election could be as late as 2010, but I agree that some long-term planning is necessary. What if it's called for the same day as the Europeans? The Electoral Commission have recommended against it, which is no guarantee that this Labour government won't do it!

Local candidates/branches can be relied on to finance a lot of the deposits required at a general election. That money wouldn't go to the national party if we didn't stand - so of the £225,000 in lost deposits most of it wouldn't be UKIP money anyway.

I think that there needs to be less emphasis on fighting every seat, but we shouldn't stop someone standing if they're prepared to fight their own campaign and stump up their own £500. Seats that are automatic lost deposits should only be fought if it costs the national party nothing.

I agree entirely ,at the moment we would be caught out if there were an election .We must get our act together on fundraising .

When I was Chairman we appointed Dick Horsnell as our fundraiser ,he was very optimistic about his task and reckoned that he could raise large amounts ,but since then (last summer) I have heard nothing about his activites ,I have even heard that he left the party .Great pity if he has.

Devastating news if true and I would want to hear the reasons why? Another spark of promise snuffed out again!
