Default Farage laughs at Corbett's claim that EU hasn't much power

Speaking in Brussels on ‘The Record – Europe’ (at 5.45 am on 12.3.2006 on BBC News 24 Television), Nigel Farage MEP (leader of the UK Independence Party group in the EU so-called ‘Parliament’) participated in a television discussion on the subject of if the EU so-called ‘Parliament’ has a lot of power.

Also on the programme with him were Sophie In’t Veld MEP (Dutch Liberal), the fanatical europhile Robin Corbett MEP (the UK Labour politician who loathes UKIP and anti-EU Conservatives) and Alojz Peterle MEP (from the Slovenian ‘centre right’).

Pro-euro Corbett (who is always telling the media - and anyone else that will listen to him - that UKIP are extreme) stated “The Commons nitty gritty legislative procedure at committee stage doesn’t even get the attention of the (UK) newspapers/media.” (Nigel Farage tried to interrupt him at this point).

Nigel Farage responded “Come on. Think about it. In the last year key votes on cigarettes (smoking) and hunting were dealt with by Westminster (the Commons). The point about this is the topicality of this. The EU Parliament has too much power. The EU Commission is unelected and the EU Parliament does the (EU) Commission’s bidding.”

Sophie In’t Veld MEP, a Dutch Liberal, complained “Barroso complains that there is no one in the room (the EU ‘Parliament’ chamber) when he makes his statements. When I make statements or ask a question (in the EU ‘Parliament’ debating chamber) they (the EU Commission and its supporters/ staff in the EU ‘Parliament’) don’t answer (my statements/questions) and there is no opportunity to ask them again why they never answered it.”

Corbett then ludicrously claimed “The gut big issues are dealt with by national parliaments.”

The programme interviewer/presenter – sounding and looking surprised - told the europhile Corbett “Nigel Farage wouldn’t agree with you on that.”

To which Nigel Farage (laughing at Corbett’s stupidity) agreed “I don’t.”

* This was the first time that Nigel Farage MEP had appeared on the programme as a guest with other MEP’s for some time (previously he has usually only appeared separately saying a few words). Timothy Kirkhope MEP, the pro-EU leader of the UK Conservative group, is invited regularly by the BBC to be on the ‘On The Record – Europe’ panel of MEP’s (who are interviewed together).

** You can see ‘The Record – Europe’ (a programme about EU affairs which usually includes a studio discussion in which at least one British MEP participates) on Sunday mornings from 5.30 am to 6 am on BBC News 24 Television.

With its expansion to 25 member states, the European Union is poised to become a vast federal superstate. As it seeks to be a “counterweight” to U.S. Global interests, will Europe replace America as the world’s leading superpower?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has more people (454.7 million) than the United States—a larger consumer market—more troops (collectively, almost two million armed forces personnel)—and with more votes on the United Nations Security Council and every other international body, stronger political muscle.

It has a president, a legislative body, a flag, a national anthem, a motto (“Unity in Diversity”), open borders between member states, a constitution (yet to be ratified), a Bill of Rights, and a court system that can overrule the highest of any member court.

It also has an emerging common culture that speaks a common language: English.

The decades-old European dream of becoming a kind of “United States of Europe” is becoming a reality.
