Default PLASTIC BAG TAX AND THE PLASTIC BAG CONSPIRACY

Have any of you noticed that the supermarkets have gradually reduced the size of plastic carrier bags?

Apparently it to make the consumer feel that they have bought more shopping with their money - smaller carrier bags = more bags in use = gives impression of more shopping!

I believe that its time for their to be introduced a carrier bag tax of 10 p per bag - this will force the supermarkets to increase the size of bags so fewer are used and also issue reusable bags so people keep using the same bags!

Woth making a UKIP issue?

Good for the environment - billions of plastic bags saved from going to the rubbish tip!

10 p a bag! Bit steep wouldn`t you say. Still, making things bit less disposable might be good if it doesn`t take a whole new govt department to run. Supermarket bags are a bit small even to be bin liners at present. sainsburies do permanent ones but never have enough in stock.

I don't know about 10 p per bag, but UKIP should address the green agenda because what is the point of being independent if we ruin the country in the process ?

As you'll know, Ireland by law has had paper bags for some years.

FWIW Tesco bags for life are 10p. The ones I glanced at yesterday seemed rather small, though.

Evidently the policy is recyclable, anyway

What UKIP needs is a comprehensive 'Green' agenda.

It may sound a bit too much like tree-hugging for some people but i think it is key for 3 reasons:

1. A green agenda would show UKIPs social commitment
2. It is economically sensible - Shifting the burden of tax toward eco-taxes would slowly re-strucutre the economy to be less reliant on Oil, thus making Britain more resistant to Oil price shocks.
3. Making Britain more energy self sufficent through renewables will reduce our dependence on 'resource wealthy' but politically unstable regions.

What the Government doesn't understand is that taxes designed to discourage consumption must only be used in conjuntion with other policies. For example there is no point in raising fuel duty if we do not provide subsidies for hybrid vehicles/more fuel efficient cars. There is no advantage in taxing petrol but not providing an alternative.

Sin taxes only work if consumers have a choice.

I agree but you missed out
4. Only a party that is independent of the EU can be green we should and could be the home of the green voter.

Yes, i can't believe i missed that!

Green issues are becoming important to more people. I think we should also explain that we would want to take part in international market mechanism based schemes such as the European emmisions trading scheme. These work and with proper financial support from the government there is no reason why British firms cannot be leaders here.

This will help show UKIP is not inward looking but willing to work internationally on issues of importance such as the environment. It would also show that independence does not mean being isolationist, and that sovereign nations can achieve things by treaty and that political union is not necessary.

I understand Ireland has had this tax on placcy bags for ages, and aparrently it works well. They charge about 10 or 15p per bag instead of giving 'em away free. This encourages people to stuff old plastic bags in their pockets before going to the supermarket, so each bag gets used several times, instead of just once, followed by a trip to the landfill site where they take six billion zillion years to degrade. A good green policy in my estimation.

And yes, UKIP definately should have good clear green policies :!:
