Default Sunday Telegraph: 'MEP misled EU cash office'

In order to avoid fraud European Union rules state the money must be paid either directly to the assistant or via a paying agent nominated by the MEP. After publication of the Sunday Telegraph article Mr Wise told his party chiefs he had acted as his own paying agent and he also agreed to pay back the extra cash.

But it has emerged that Mr Wise misled his party. In fact the EU payments office believed it was paying Ms Jenkins directly because on the form submitted to the payments office Mr Wise had inserted one of his own bank account numbers under the name of "Stags" and indicated that it belonged to Ms Jenkins. The payments office was also given the contract between Mr Wise and Ms Jenkins in which the same account number had also been inserted next to her name.

Last night Nigel Farage, a UKIP MEP and founder member of the party, said: "We initially thought that Tom Wise was acting directly as a paying agent but we now understand that was not the case".

He should have been sacked immediately upon the offence being discovered. Yes,we know it has to go thru this and that ,the point is he should have initially been suspended and a statement then made by the UKIP Leadership,NEC or whoever does these things for UKIP. ops:

:!:  :!: I have had a long chat with Doug Denny. There has been suggestion on this list, and elsewhere, that the discipline committee should get involved. Not yet. Those in the party who feel that Tom Wise should be treated no differently from Ashley Mote, i.e. should have his whip withdrawn as a precaution, should be escalating this through the correct channel, which is their branch chairman, or where there is no branch the regional organiser. They can then pass these thoughts upward. :!:  :!:

Why are you saying our leadership are incapable of initiating this procedure.

They should realise the damage this is doing and act.

Drip drip drip is bad bad bad. In his short quote (doubtless wrenched from a context), Nigel seems to be saying that either the party was misled or it misunderstood. I'm unclear which.

The source for the report seems to be in (or very close to) the Payments Office. I wonder who / why?

Shouldn't this be a relatively simple matter to bottom?

(Tom said at the Eastern Counties meeting that a complaint had been made to the Disciplinary Committee.)

Yes, it was, but not backed up by any hard evidence. Unless and until any appears, showing how UKIP rules have been broken, Doug Denny will contiunue to regard this as a matter for the MEPs
