Default Petition & data protection act

I have been looking at the opt-in boxes on the petition forms:

On the main petition form it says: 'Please tick the box if you agree to
being contacted by the UK Independence & Democracy Group and UKIP'

On the website it says: 'Opt in for further information about the
Independence and Democracy Group, UKIP and this campaign'

However, on the A5 card leaflets, it says: 'For more information about this
campaign please tick this box'.

We are due to receive 14,000 of these A5 card leaflets to be distributed in our constituency. I think that there are 9 million of these leaflets in total?

It looks to me as though none of the data collected via the A5 leaflets can be used to contact people with regard to joining UKIP. They will have to be very careful about what they say.

Do you think that this is a ****-up? Or am I being too pedantic?

As long as they tick the box the party can contact them, provided they give the information required first they can then go on to ask about membership of UKIP etc.

I assume the telesales staff will be briefed on this important issue - £10,000 fine for each breach of the DPA otherwise.

They will have to be very careful about what they say. There are plenty of enemies of UKIP out there who would love to cause trouble for the party by catching it out.
