I sense the beginnings of a consensus here. Christina's reply contains some useful insights.

There is a lot of sympathy amongst voters for UKIP's anti-EU, pro-democracy message, but voters cannot vote for that alone because there is a country to be run.

The voters will not put any party INTO phpbb_power unless they can be trusted first and foremost to competently manage the economy and protect peoples jobs, income and mortgages, health and education.

The voters are saying to UKIP, "we are fed up with professional politicians, lies and spin", "we are interested in what you are saying but please tell us more", "allow us to trust your party on these key issues and then we will have a serious look at what withdrawing from the EU would mean".

The political classes in Labour and Tory party have lost the plot and there is no enthusiasm for them amongst the electorate. Labour were elected by default in 2005. UKIP are actually banging at a door that is wide open if only they would put down their EU battering ram for a while and look up.
