I feel I need to comment on Bluemerles previous post, or more precisely the extract from Eurorealist, bearing in mind that 'eurorealist' does not necessarily mean 'member of UKIP' by any stretch of the imagination.
It was not from the Eurorealist site, although GLW is pontificating on there, it was from http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/

A comment from the blog might throw some light on events.

Quote:
"The blog "UKIP Uncovered" repeated warned Ms Holdsworth that this would be the inevitable end. Others warned that Nattrass was not to be trusted based on the fact that he had been originally elected to UKIP's NEC on the platform of supporting the party leader and clearing out those seen as illegal usurpers. Just before the NEC's first meeting he had lunch with the leading "usurper" who offered him the party chairmanship. This was enough to make him change sides.

For all the reasons mentioned above I think they've outlived any usefulness they might once have hoped to have."

I seem to remember reading about a number of previous outbursts from, and personal rows involving, Mike Nattrass. I really don't think he is leadership material. He is plainly a talented man, as you can see from his speeches in the EU Parliament, but we badly need a leader who is a conciliator, someone with good diplomatic and personal skills. A party leader needs other skills too, but he can't do without those ones.

Jeffrey Titford as leader (2000-2002) had these skills in abundance. The Guardian wrote in 2001:

Quote:
Titford is an emollient man, a sort of Willie Whitelaw figure, and an ideal leader for such a fractious party - "8,000 members and 9,000 egos", as one supporter put it.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/europarl/S...443000,00.html

We need that kind of leader again. We have so much talent in this party, but the party is constantly threatenning to blow itself apart through internal squabbling. We need to put that behind us, and develop a much more supportive, trusting and friendly internal atmosphere.

Latest on Dr Norths Blog:

It appears that Natrass and Tom Wise are to put themselves up respectively for chairman and vice-chairman at the party's AGM next weekend.

I wonder what spin will be put on this news at the Conference? UKIP needs to get its act together otherwise we will spend the next ten years in the wilderness.

Not great news. But never mind

Maybe now we can actually get some quality leadership, because we are chasing our tails at the moment.

If only Enoch Powell or Alan Clarke were still alive. We need a strong leader full of courage and conviction. A man or woman who loves their country and wishes to serve her. We need a leader dedicated to turning UKIP INTO phpbb_a party that will offer the people of Britain a real alternative to the failed old party system. A leader not afraid to voice their concerns about immigration, crime, etc. We need a leader not content to sit on the fence, the centre or middle of the road. If you sit in the middle of the road you usually get run over. We need more patriotism and a move to more honest polices. If this is seen as a move to the right then so be it. The majority of people I met in the general election would be classed as right wing.

Yes it's about time all this PC mincing around stopped. Ironically some of the most PC members members of this forum are the ones who keep repeating that they are opposed to Political Correctness.

At a recent meeting in London the excellent Simon Heffer dismissed the 'Tory Modernisers' as 'people who think we should be nice to ethnic minorities and homosexuals' - Pc-ites in other words.

Make sure UKIP doesn't waddle down the same path.

(Ironically I should think the not-very-popular Mr Nattrass is one of the least likely to follow in that direction)

I've never really looked at the UKIP team before Mike woke me up with the news, but Petrina looks like an asset that you really can't afford to lose.

Is is impossible to find people who want to work together to achieve the common goal above their own drive for power?

It seems totally counterproductive.

I'd certainly welcome Petrina INTO phpbb_ProgCon if she supports the core values and aims as I am looking to build the right team rather than seek to occupy the top roles myself.
