The results of the Salford City Council by-election for the Barton ward, held on 29 September 2005, are as follows:

Electorate: 8,700
Potter, Norbert Labour 676
Gill, Bernard UKIP 137
Laurence, Roy Lib Dem 389
Tope, Judith Ann Conservative 189
Valentine, Alan Dominic Independent 93
Void votes: 5
Percentage poll: 17.14% Total votes cast: 1489

UKIP came 4th, but were only 52 votes behind the Tories

29th September 2005 Election Barton Ward, Salford, Manchester West -results in detail:-

Con 189 12.74% -13.66%
Lab 676 45.55% +3.83%
FibDem 389 26.21% -5.67%
Ind 93 6.27% +6.27%
UKIP 137 9.23% +9.23%

UKIP took 9.23% of the vote in a ward where I believe they have never stood before. It appears UKIP and the Independent candidate took votes from the Tories and the FibDems!

Potter, Norbert (Labour) 676 45%

Gill, Bernard (UKIP) 137 9%

Laurence, Roy (Lib Dem) 389 26%

Tope, Judith Ann (Conservative) 89 12%

Valentine, Alan Dominic (Independent) 93 6%

Void votes: 5
Percentage poll: 17.14% Total votes cast: 1489

This was the first Local election that our branch have been able to fight since its birth in Sept 2004. We are very pleased with this result. We have taken the fight to the heart of Labours home lands and we intend to keep fighting harder and harder in our battle for truth in politics and true local democracy.

We are in a very good position to become the third party in Manchester and Salford, in the very near future. We intend to Grasp this position firmly, with both hands.

The First UKIP Cllr in Salford and Manchester now seems a very achieveable goal.

Your result was a good result considering you had never stood in the area before.

What type of campaign did you run - any canvassing? And did the press give you any publicity?
