Probably a good debate to be had here - and to be frank I am not going to say I have the right answer, but I can't accept that freedom of speech means the right of everyone to call or write what they like about anyone WITHOUT some form of repercussion.
Your definition of freedom of speech would mean that the libel and slander laws would need to withdrawn? Your definition of freedom of speech means someone can stand in a public place and shout 'all ****'s are b*****' or whatever without fear of official recourse? I don't want to live there. |

Freedom of speech walks hand in hand with the responsibility to ensure you do not grieveously offend. And of course, at the core of Libertarian thinking, which is being slandered here, is the condition that you may do whatever you please AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT INFRINGE THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS. Thus, inciting the infringement of the rights of another individual, or any individuals for that matter, would not be at all welcome.
No right thinking person can think that they may say anything and take no responsibility for their words. Alex |
