It's important not to confuse the obvious need to campaign with the subject matter of the campaign - what are you campaigning for and what are you seeking to achieve?
To campaign and recruit is the whole purpose of branches and does not change from one year to the next except it gets more intesive at election time. Campaigning on the streets is a very effective way to attract attention and UKIP branches have been doing it in growing numbers for about a decade now. However it is only sensible to choose issues which meet the long term aspirations of your party. The UKIP leadership seem to think the single issue of the EU is the one that UKIP should address to the virtual exclusion of all others. That is one point of view but I can tell you that it will not help you win seats at the next general election. In fact the more you paint yourself INTO phpbb_this particular corner the more difficulty you will have achieving success outside the small group of comitted anti-EU voters. UKIP has been campaigning for so long now on the single issue that it may already be impossible to change public perception. However we all know that the voters are desperate for something different, more democracy, a break up of the two party system, an end to lies and spin. There is a vacuum and I believe that UKIP, out of all the smaller UK parties is actually best placed to fill it because within its jumbled set of beliefs are fundamental ideas about truth and democracy. But UKIP will not be able to fill the vacuum unless it changes its focus. That is something the members need to decide fairly soon I would say because the opportunity will not be there forever. There is absolutely no reason why branches cannot use this petition, but to make it the focus of UKIPs campaigning seems to me as though the party leadership is rather deliberately avoiding any serious consideration about the future of the party and how to turn the recent electoral failure INTO phpbb_future success. What they are doing in fact is sitting on their hands. |

I believe in the cause, even if I wish UKIP were not doing it right now.
I have signed it and I will be getting people to do so (already have a few!). I even put a link in my first article in the Guvnor Times. Admit it, if we could get a few million sigs it would be impressive.

And remember what dear old Maggie said. "All of those people that didn’t vote obviously agree with me" So it will be two million for and fifty odd million against. |

If we don't get a few mill it will be bad.
If we do though, I think it would be seen as impressive that little UKIP managed it. As I said, I wish they hadn't done it yet, but they have, so we have no option but to put up.

I know.
We'll have to fix that, or die trying.
