I was a vegetarian, but stopped because I realised it is morally wrong. It's also a very good example of the damaging effects that well-meaning left wingers can have on the very things they are trying to help, for vegetarianism has been widely embraced on the left and goes back a long way there to the Fabians and even Hitler, if one remembers the Socialist part of National Socialism (one of the evil twins, the other being International Socialism).

There are no herds of freed cattle roaming the prairies of Sussex. Vegetarianism means that animals are not born at all. People actually become vegetarian for their own benefit, not that of animals, and this striving for personal purity permeates the whole of the left, and damn the consequences. Remember the "not in my name" banners on protest marches.

Instead of being vegetarian, we can buy free range and rare breed meat, as well as wild meat. This ensures that animals are born, and that they have good lives until they are killed - humanely and in small local slaughterhouses or on the farm if at all possible. Creating an economic logic for the preservation of habitat means that the habitat is more likely to be preserved. Anthing that lives has to die. But this way, animals actually get to live.

Religion should not be used to excuse animal cruelty

We are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers yet we turn a blind eye to religious slaughter of animals.

In our multi cultural society we are always making allowances for other religions and groups - is it not too much to ask other religions and groups that reside in this country to make allowances for our animal protection laws?

Of course. The amount of bloody letters I sent out about it.

It's under construction at the moment, these things. I have fingers in pies (but not meat pies as am a vegetarian).

Oh, chap who said being vege was morally wrong - **** off! Who are you to tell me that my decision to not support barbaric farming methods is wrong? They wouldn't have been born? No? Well, they won't die a hideous death either. Would you want to come back as one?

Er... I specifically advocated the avoidance of animals raised under barbaric farming methods. In fact, ethical meat eating creats a virtuous circle, whereby the economies of scale and scope of distribution improve under market forces and more animals get to live, have a good life and die humanely (more so than most wild animals experience).

On the "who are you to..." front, who are you to tell me to **** off when I make a completely reasonable and reasoned argument?
