Seems the EU has learned a thing or two from our own Mark Croucher 8)
In an attempt to find out who is leaking sensitive information to the press, the European Commission has set up a "sting" system, trade sources say. An internal draft document of the upcoming reform of the EU's sugar regime began circulating Wednesday (18 May) showing deep cuts to sugar prices of 39 per cent over two years, sharper than the 33 per cent cuts proposed last summer in the Commission's communication on reform. The new proposal is expected on 22 June. But on Thursday, a nearly identical draft was also circulating the halls of Brussels and was leaked to the press. The first draft showed a final sugar price of €370 per tonne while the second draft showed €385 per tonne. According to three separate sugar production sources from different member states, who wished to remain anonymous, each Commissioner was given a slightly different draft of the reform proposal so the Commission was able to track where the leak came from. |
