Yes, you know how these things drag on. I think he is quite happy to be Independent and he's doing a great job.

He was thrown out for not telling the party about the trial, not for the trial itself, as far as I understood it. Therefore it's irrelevant what the outcome of the trial is.

He's shown that he's a hard worker and a good digger. If he is cleared in his trial I hope he is swiftly reinstated as a member of the UKIP group.

Obviously we can't talk about his legal situation as it is sub judice. He says on his website:

Quote:
Personal statement
In view of the continuing public speculation about my court case, my lawyers have asked me to point out yet again that a non-publicity order was made in the High Court by Mr Justice Aikens that specifically forbids the reporting of any issues of law or legal ruling on the case without the leave of the court. This followed a similar ruling in the Crown Court by His Honour Judge Sessions. Both rulings are in force. The Contempt of Court Act and section 41 of the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act apply. Beyond that I can confirm only that the allegations are vigorously denied and always have been.

Since Mote and his researcher parted company, there seems to have been precious little 'good digging' going on. A number of his press releases since December 2004 have either regurgitated old information, told us about what other MEPs are doing, or have proven to be little more than a vehicle for self-aggrandisement.

The EU's Legal Affairs Committee have been asked to determine whether his alleged parliamentary immunity should be waived; they're discussing it again on 24 May.

I would have thought that Aiken J's ruling was designed to curtail detailed reporting on the subject prior to the trial, rather than eradicating general queries as to whether it's still ongoing.

Googling on "ashley mote"+"housing benefit" or "ashley mote"+"parliamentary immunity" should answer most people's queries without this site falling foul of the ruling.

Google for Ashley Mote....

result 1 - up for housing Fraud....
result 9 - He's complaining about Fraud in the EU....

If the result goes against it'll show he's a hypocrite, thief and liar and I for one hope he gets taken to the cleaners as an example to everyone who thinks they can make a bit on the side off the British people... whether the bogus claimant be Joe public or a sitting MEP.

On another note you've got to question the selection process of a party who lets someone being investigated for multiple charges of benefit fraud stand as a candidate; especially for a party actively campaigning on a promise to 'expose fraud'.
