I didn't really know if the cartoon idea was good or not. On one hand we had to get interest in our leaflets and a picture paints a thousand words. On the other hand though, did it make us look serious?
The fact that no other party does it makes me wonder, but as there are so many factors to consider, I don't know if this was a blunder or not yet. What does everyone else think?

The immigration one (the one they printed 90% of) AND put on our election addresses. I think it did us more harm than good.
Our own members were uncomfortable about handing them out in town. For me that speaks volumes. I was uncomfortable about the focus we put on it too. I think we have to accept that while it is an issue, it is just one of many. Britain is a PC country and the image this conjured up of UKIP was not good.

I totally agree with your post on the immigration leaflet. I live in a bit of a leafy suburb and was very selective where I posted them. I myself was not comfortable about giving them out. Now that cant be right can it.

I was always critical of the emphasis on the Immigration Leaflet. Almost every (active) member in Gloucester didn't like them.
If our own members don't like them we really should not use them! In future the party should produce these leaflets in a sample set and get people in to test them: response to each in turn type thing. It would sound out the feeling of the average potential UKIP voter and we could avoid this from happening again.

The pensioner one was ok, but as you say the immigration one was a bit daunting to give away as you didnt know how people would take it, if they just looked they didnt get the facts they had to read the little caption.
I didnt think it gave enough information. the six bits on the back was the same so if you gave them the two there was nothing to read. when I started in january I was giving out some leaflets from the civil liberties which gave people information, and something to think about. where I live they have a residents association and they put out a small leaflet every month, no cost to the public but it gives people the chance to find things out, I think that we should publish a similar leaflet and do the same about the EU. I know we get the UKIP bulleting but it dousent get around to the public unless they buy it. also UKIP TV on sattelite..... |

I like the cartoon idea. I do not know how many people read all the leaflets that are put through but a GOOD cartoon will get peoples attention.
All the attention on immigration was down to Dick Morris. I believe he got this point wrong. At a meeting a few weeks before the election I said this to Roger Knapman and he told me that they were following Dick Morris all the way. I would have rather put a Labour or Tory emblem on our election address and have made out that it came from them!! (I would have delivered them as well) in fact I was totally discusted with our address. Labour address about hard working families, putting children first and Healthcare, our address made us look like we were racial!! I am not saying that our poor results would have been any different (I do personally think we would have had a few more votes) but the campaign was our downfall. I wonder if it was masterminded by the Tories? I thought that the Party Election Broadcast was excellent. I agree with Alex in producing a sample set and sending them to Branches to see what we think as this must never be allowed to happen again. |

Cheers Michael.
Yeah if we can all push the leadership INTO phpbb_providing a sample set we can prevent this happening again. Also I rather liked some of the cartoons but others were ineffective and poor. When I saw the election adress I knew it was a catastrophic mistake as I would have been put off by it, and my cousin who was going to vote for us also was and ended up voting GREEN! But that said most of the cartoons were O.K.
