Default Defection to UKIP on Dudley Council?

I noticed the other day that Coun. Malcolm Davis of St James's ward on Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council was now listed as a UKIP councillor. This is the same Coun. Davis who was elected in June 2004 as a Liberal Democrat.

Has anyone with local knowledge got the story behind this defection?

Gauntlet thrown down in by-election challenge
A DUDLEY councillor's decision to resign from the Liberal Democrats has led to a bitter war of words erupting with a political rival.

St James' ward member cllr Malcolm Davis left the party he has served for more than eight years over Christmas after he was rejected as a possible parliamentary candidate.

His shock resignation has led to former labour candidate Dr Mike Hammond challenging him to resign from the council and face him in a by-election.

Councillor Davis has laughed off the suggestion and sees no reason why he should agree to the head-to-head.

He said: "I treat such a challenge with the contempt it deserves.

"As far as I'm concerned I got voted in due to my name and the hard work I have done and not because of the party I was standing for.

"My priority has always been to work for the people of St James' first and then go along with the party political stance second."
