Default Cycle paths, what are your thoughts on these

Not a major issue, but perhaps something on a local level for UKIP councils and MP's to devote a few minutes though to when looking at transport issues.

What are people's thoughts on cycle paths so far?

Do you think they are a good thing or bad thing, why.

Are they a good thing but poorly implimented so far?

Do you think they should be part of the road network or perhaps a completely separate system.

This isn't a question on whether cyclists should pay road tax or have insurance, that can be a separate thread.

I'll leave my own opinions off for a bit and see what comes in.

That's why I said it wasn't a big issue, just something to express some thoughts on without alienating a lot of people.

As for numbers, no idea, there is a national cycle path network book. Our local path number is 66 and its not the highest number. But that is a national path rather than a local route so I suspect no one really knows exactly.

As for cyclists, there will be a lot of overlap as many cycl;ists are also drivers at various times.

We've got a couple by us. Damn good things, utilising old railway lines. V popular with dog walkers and courting couples as well.

Trouble is, when it gets to the village it diverts through the village on usual roads, all that they have done is put a white line about two foot out INTO phpbb_the carriageway, the bit between the path and the line is the cycle route.

this is fine except that there are no parking restrictions - so in effect the allotted area for the cyclist is null and void, unless you have a mountain bike and can ride over all the cars........

Some of the cycle paths in my area , look as if someone with a map said "Put one there" there are roads about two car widths with green cycle paths INTO phpbb_the centre of the road. I think a bit more thought INTO phpbb_them would be better, even if they where to take a bit of the farmers field.

where I am they are more interested in taking over the road for busses.

I think most of them are poorly planned.

I think they are a must. With governments telling us not to use our car cycling to work would be a good alternative option. Healthy, saves money and is good for the environment. They should be completely separate from footpaths and roads though, nobody likes cycling along side a HGV. We have a few by us ,white lines in the middle of footpaths pathetic really.

Woking a lot of them.

Mosty unused as far as I can tell.

If people are to stop thinking of the car as the only option, then attitudes need to change. Perhaps putting bike routes will be part of the solution, but there needs to be a lot more.

For me the wind and rain is always going to make people err towards the car in general.

I do a 12 hour shift, days and nights. Convince me that I should give up my 15 min warm dry car drive, for a 30-45 minute hard slog in the elements.

Perhaps if you shortened my working day in exchange for me coming in on bike, I might be tempted!

Maybe I just need convincing that my car is destroying the planet instead?

Anything which keeps unregulated, unlicensed, untaxed, uninsured vehicle users away from my car is a good thing.
