Default David Davies vs David Davis

http://www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/View...ticleID=933555
Quote:
From: Jonathan Arnot, political correspondent to Godfrey Bloom MEP, Ravenscroft Close, Sheffield.
IN response to Dr Paul Charlson's letter "Don't lose out to same named MP" (January 26), may I be permitted to set the record straight concerning UKIP's intentions against the Shadow Home Secretary David Davis?
Firstly, Mr Davis was a government whip for the vote in favour of the Maastricht Treaty – hardly the most Eurosceptic of Conservatives.
Secondly, in Haltemprice and Howden there is no guarantee that UKIP would take mainly Conservative votes. The Liberal Democrats in that seat take anti-Conservative protest votes.
UKIP's campaign intends to take a substantial number of votes from the Liberal Democrats, so we are not trying to "let a LibDem in by the back door".
Thirdly, the story that UKIP intend to field a candidate named David Davies is mere media speculation. The person concerned has not yet applied to stand in Haltemprice and Howden, and in any case UKIP selects candidates on the basis of ability. We select the most able candidate, not on the basis of race, gender, etc – so we wouldn't select a PPC just because he happens to have a similar name to David Davis.
If David Davis represents his constituency as well as he claims to, then surely he can have nothing to fear from UKIP – can he?
I think Davies should win on the quality of his second name alone. However I guess this may be an issue for Veritas rather than UKIP soon?

Dave is just starting out
Default

Quite right on the name Matt, tis a fine name and should be held in the highest regard.

This I found odd;

"Thirdly, the story that UKIP intend to field a candidate named David Davies is mere media speculation. The person concerned has not yet applied to stand in Haltemprice and Howden"

As I was shortlisted by the chair person.
