Fuel Duty. Any substance used for the propulsion of a road vehicle is subject to excise duty. In theory you may use cooking oil/methanol provided that you tell the Customs and Excise afterwards and pay the appropriate duty. This would still be cheaper than diesel, so remember to tell them that you are doing it won't you? You can also get cars which run off compressed natural gas from Volvo. All the range except V40 and S40. There are a few filling stations for CNG but there is a firm that makes a compressor from your garage which fills the car overnight. This is really cheap too, although there are few of these cars around. They run off petrol too.
But back to cooking oil. You can use used stuff from the chippy if you filter it.
But beware, someone in Monmouthshire had his car seized by Customs at what was said to be a random check but he had been buying the stuff by the gallon.

That is grossly unfair - how is one supposed to cut back on expenses?

So, next time I dig out the ol' steam engine, I'll have to give a list, to customs and excise, of all the combustibles I used that day?
