Default REMINDER RKS QUESTION TIME BEEB 1 10.35

Quote:
REMINDER RKS QUESTION TIME BEEB 1 10.35

Also appearing (the supporting cast? The chorus?) are:-

ED BALLS Labour Parliamentary Candidate
OLIVER LETWIN MP Shadow Chancellor
MATTHEW TAYLOR MP Liberal Democrat Party Chairman
GERMAINE GREER Writer, Broadcaster and Academic

Seriously, a tough panel. Much more get up and go about this lot than the 'Any Questions' panel, I think.

I will look forward to this. That is one hell of a line up. RKS could make or break himself tonight!

It will be interesting to see if the entire programme becomes about RKS once more.

Kilroy was very very good, on clapometer had more than others on panel, had Letwin agreeing with certain points and left Ed Balls for dead.

Well done RKS

I thought that he was fine. He had an edge to everything that he said, which I liked.

He was, however, a little aggressive with the lady talking about the "humiliating" photograph issue. She had clearly made a silly comment and I think that she knew it, but he pressed it too hard. It is fine to be aggressive to other politicians, but members of the public are very soft targets.

I thought that Germaine Greer was also pretty good.

Ed Balls had a terrible time and was outnumbered and outgunned. I think that he should have abandoned the party line and simply stated what he actually thought under those circumstances. As it was, he looked pretty silly at times. I did feel sorry for him though.

I moved this in from a separate thread:

1. How disliked and distrusted the current government is.
2. Ollie Letwin agreeing with most of RKS's points - maybe a deliberate approach to show that RKS (and by association, UKIP) are really tories, so don't split the vote - or maybe just happenstance. As I said, the questions were not really that divisive.

As for RKS, he was OK, nothing special.

His replies are still a bit too populist and surface for me and I get the feeling the audience is beginning to know this. Some of his themes are predictable. He relies on gut feel and (probably) insufficient research. (Sorry Tony! - I expect you'll read this)

He still approaches these things with too much of the chat show host - it isn't your show RKS, don't overtalk and interrrupt, you just look arrogant. Don't grin when the audience applaud - it looks like you're point scoring. Don't go too far out on a limb when you don't need to, just to get some of the audience on your side - i.e Paisley / IRA.

In summary, populist not statesman-like.

Does Robert Kilroy-Silk actually know what has been happening in Northern Ireland? Pictures of weapons being destroyed are most likely not in any way humiliating - it's the fact that Rev. Ian Paisley said he would use them in a "process of humiliation" which is the point at hand.

The bottom line is that if Ian Paisley hadn't made those remarks, we would have a much stronger possibility of a peace solution this week. At 16, I think I can safely say as one of Northern Ireland's youth that most of us don't care about all of this rubbish - we just want peace for our own futures. The political parties seem to have lost track of that somewhat.

As a Protestant living in N. Ireland, it makes me angry when I hear people saying that photographs are not important. For me, it is the only way I would believe that the people who have killed and maimed members of my own family were serious about stopping the violence. Well done to Robert Kilroy-Silk - one of the few British politicians who has the same view as most peace loving Northern Ireland Protestants.

I am appalled to find myself in the position of agreeing with Kilroy-Silk. But the very fact that Blunkett paid back the money for the rail ticket indicates he admits that he stole from the public. How can we have a self-confessed thief in charge of law and order?

Kilroy Silk strikes again. I wish he would not say that he was a Catholic - he gives us and any other group he belongs to a bad name. On tonight's programme he started to brow-beat a young female member of the audience when asked about Northern Ireland.

I presume that the objectives of Question Time require that panel members are able to contribute with some degree of civility, respect for others views, and with some sense of reflection on what has been said. Why, then, do you give airtime to the reactionary and inflammatory views of R Kilroy Silk? It can't be because he is a specialist in any way, or wields any influence, or has any credible political platform! So why do you let him undermine the show?

Well, I tried to watch the program from two viewpoints. Firstly I tried to watch the program as a regular member of public, then as UKIP member.

I thought he got of to a torrid start. On the first issue of the right to defend your home, he was doing well until he made the mistake of blagging it. He was asked how many cases of people being taken to court for attacking a raider he knew of, and he said quite a few. Then asked to name one of them and he couldn't, it was kind of an awkward moment. Oliver Leftwin stepped in to help him out, thankfully, but I don't really like having other people bail our guys out.

Next up was the IRA question above, I personally was a bit uneasy on how he answered this question. I agreed with him that it was silly that the IRA wouldn't show a picture. What a small petty thing to get hung up on, especially when the IRA could fake one just to keep things moving. My problem was his big defence of Ian Paisley, I didn't think he needed to take sides so vocally and it left me feeling a bit stunned. The lady tried to rubbish his opinion, and she did not deserve the mauling that RKS gave her.

I think Dimbleby doesn't like RKS, and just like all the other times RKS has been on Question Time, he got told off for patronising and talking over people. RKS really needs to show more restraint sometimes, as it gives and air of being out of control. He was also very jumpy and fidgity, which something I always look out for, since George W was pulled apart for doing the same.

Thankfully RKS got better as the program went on, and he settled down a bit. All subjects he got the most support from the audience, and I think on balance he actually came out as the person most in tune with the audience. His passion makes him a person that people either love or hate, again you can draw similarities with George W here.

Right near the end he couldn't resist bringing up his spat with the Arabs again. Sometimes I think he should let that lie, but on this occasion I think he used it to good effect, and left the show on a positive note.

So overall I thought a weak start, but finished strong, and I put that down to the fact that he settled down a bit.
