I've just done a bit of quick and dirty analysis of the 19 press releases from UKIP in the last 3 months. Data straight from the UKIP web site.
Of the 19 press releases (just over 6 per MONTH):- 2 were no-brainers with zero impact. (Sakharov's widow supports UKIP candidate for prize and Thanks to Dartford) 1 is a brief firefighting statement due to the Bloom affair. 1 is a brief statement (incorrect) saying Knapman has unanimous NEC backing 2 are brief statements about RKS withdrawing from the MEP group. 4 cover the Barrot/Barroso issue and deal therefore with the internal politics of the EU. Okay, thats 10. So the majority do not deal with any UK issue or the ways in which the UK is affected daily by the EU, as expounded in these pages. What about the other 9? 1 is a statement claiming UKIP was a leading partner in the NE referendum 'No' result. (debatable point) 2 deal with the EU constitution and the funding for the YES campaign. 1 is a loony piece about passive smoking. 1 is a complex point by John Whittaker on the Euro and EMU. Really a brief report of his speech in the EU parliament. Now thats 15/19. No attacks yet.... 1 is an attack on the gov for using Adair Turner. (October!) 1 attacks the government on asylum.(October) 2 are attacks by a bloke called Kilroy Silk.(October) Summary. A number (7) are purely about the internal EU issues which would not be of interest, I think, to the average punter, at least, not in the way they were expressed. Only 4 / 19 are meaningful statements on the way the EU afects the daily life of this country. 2 of these by RKS, 2 others in October, nothing since. Only one attacked a new government intiative, and this was the infamous 'passive smoking' release (what a vote winner!) WHAT IS GOING ON? Hello......there's an election to be fought................ |

I think Anthony's made a fair point (crawl...) since a lot of that discussion is just Knapman is **** / RKS is good (or vice versa), and as such is opinion rather than reasoned argument, in the main.
Actually I don't particularly care who leads the party, as long as it is strongly led. My feeling is currently UKIP is not on an election footing, and needs to be. Our weakest area is lack of spokespeople making meaningful points, hence this post. I think the evidence presented cannot be argued, but we shall see.............. |

No - I have no worries about being sensored - In the spur of the typing moment often go beyond the remit Anthony set regarding leadership debates and as long as rules are applied fairly accross the board I'll happy accept the greater good argument!
I dont think we're on an election footing either - I hope the upper management are keeping quiet to burst onto the scene later......... |

There are hundreds of newspapers and AFAIK we are all able to write. If every member took time out to write one letter a week to a newspaper then we can make a difference ourselves. Folks talk of "Raising the UKIP's profile" yet do nothing themselves. We can do this thing ourselves, we do not have to rely upon others who are already exceedingly busy to do it for us. |

Intbel - that's a sweet notion and one I wish was true but in reality it's always the general who leads the charge! Without direction what can we do? You ask jo public what they think about UKIP they'll probably say we were a one of for the last european election!
