Default RKS on question time

Quick post after tonights Any Questions, featuring the pungent RKS.

My summary:-

Vince Cable - less than average, predicatble, didn't make any really good points. Far too much sympathy for Blunkett.
Ruth Kelly - stuck to the party line with little evidence of independant thought. The audience sensed this. Labour toady - she'll go far!
Robert Kilroy Silk - Good at the beginning, lost some of the audience during for interupting, lost a lot at the end when trying to defend the 'Limb amputators' statements. RKS needs to avoid this issue like the plague, if tonights performance has not damaged him. I wonder if any complaints have been made against him tonight?
Shailesh Vara - Balanced, intelligent, humourous at times. Watch this guys career, I was impressed. Shame about his party allegiance!

I agree with you, that was not one of RKS' better nights. I am usualy quite impressed when he goes up against other parties, but he came across as impatient and almost bullying.

Lucky for him that hardly anyone listens to the show!

BTW, does anyone know why someone

"covered RKS head to toe in farmyard slurry!"

Roger Knapman doesn't own a farm does he?

Just went and read Coles blog. He says RKS spoke like Jesus and had the crowd eating out of his hand. Except the bit where he says RKS was being barracked over the immigration issue.

He also suggests that the slurry attack was by an Islamic guy. I didn't realise we had that many Islamic farmers in this country!

I'm glad he didn't get attacked at Wokingham, I hate the smell of slurry.

Close Matt!

First 4 para's are accurate enough though. I thought that publicly supporting the thirty quid on pensions was quite astute. And he showed good sense to concede the last question to Vara.

Shame about the Islam, arab states etc tirade.

I just listened to it again. I don't know how I missed the bit where it was made clear, that the slurry attack was made by someone claiming to represent Islam!

My opinion on RKS' performance has also softened a little. If you can ignore all the shouting down he was getting from the audience, and actualy listen to what he says, I don't think it was that bad. It is very hard to put across the point that you believe the Western way of doing things is more acceptable than some other cultures.

Would you rather live in a society where women are not treated as equals, allow torture and push one brand of religion on the people? I wouldn't so, how can that culture be considered equal? Some cultures follow cannibalism , is that allowable and equal?

Unfortunately the first impression is what most people will take away, and that is not good for a potential UKIP leader. If he could turn back time an not mention this belief, I think he would do so. As I think there is a danger that this issue is going to come back everytime someone wants to attack him.

Can't see the problem. What Kilroy said about some cultures being less acceptable than others is correct - the islamic people he is attacking are those with a version of their faith on a par with Christians who have carried out torture or burnings in the name of their religion, as in the middle ages or later in the inquisition. If Kilroy describes the way things are honestly and accurately, he is performing a necessary function, and will be recognised for that by the vast bulk of the public.

I share your sentiment, but my feeling is he lost some of the support he had gainedin the audience during this portion of the show. Regretfully it was near the end, so he had no time to recover.

For his own standing, whether it is correct or not, he should steer clear of this issue. Fight on the ground where he is secure and has massive public support.

Host Jonathan Dimbleby told listeners at the start of the programme what had happened to the panel member, who had to be cleaned up and change his clothes.

Some of the slurry also hit Cabinet Office minister Ruth Kelly, who was walking INTO phpbb_the building with Mr Kilroy Silk.

The MEP, who was elected as a member of the UK Independence Party but has since resigned the party’s whip, said on air that his assailant had shouted: “In the name of Islam.”
