Default Hartlepool

Anyone know how UKIP are doing in Hartlepool election today? I am a bit disapointed that we are apparently scrapping it out for 3rd place with the Tories. I would have hoped for better, and if Labour win by any kind of margin I will dispair.

I just don't understand how anyone can vote for Blair and his band of cronies any more.

Its this almost inate feeling of the working class, especially the older generation, to vote labour again and again. I dont understand it, especially after so many different people have been upset by Blair an the rest of them.

I suppose that it comes down to tribal loyalties. People who support a particular cause/team/party tend ignore the stories that don't conform to their desired image of thir party. By the same effect, any positive news is amplified to represent far more than it really does. Hence people tend to stick with their parties and become deaf to bad news.

Then there is the current phenomenon that all political parties are seen as untrustworthy. If they are all the same, why not stick with the one you know best? The alternatives just don't look great to the electorate.

UKIP 3195

Conservatives 3044

Lib Dems 10719

Labour 12752

Save Our Hospital 572
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3rd place!!!!!!

That is a fantastic result. It shows that UKIP is being taken seriously as a national party. We shouldn't have expected anything more than that, especially in a Labour stronghold.

A particularly nasty acceptance speech though. Very ingracious.

The BBC coverage included David Willetts from the Conservatives repeating the usual statement that the Tories "need to show that they can connect with 21st Century Britain". What they never seem to realise is that the reason they don't look like they are a modern party is because they aren't. They actually believe that changing the party isn't necessary and all they need is some new public relations experts.

Roger Knapman came across very well, I thought. He sounded very reasonable and didn't resort to slagging off the other parties as the other three panelists did.

It is probably a tactic that we should continue in future elections. The three main parties are seen as petty squabblers, and they just keep on doing it. If we can be seen to rise above it, then that can only help our image.

Beating the Tories is good, as it shows UKIP are keeping the momentum going from the Euro elections and are now getting significant votes in non Euro elections.

It really does gaul me that Labour now have the seat even though the majority of people did not vote for them.

I wish we had the same system as used for London Mayor, as then I could use my primary vote for UKIP and then my anyone but Labour vote for my secondary. It would mean I had to put up with one of the other parties winning, but it would be a bit of compensation at least.

Default Innate feelings and tribal loyalties

It is understandable why LP-2004 and Anthony Butcher have made comments regarding the working class with their innate feelings and tribal loyalties. However, most labour supporters these days are of the middle classes who are supporting new labour, and not the working class who have been decimated By ‘Blair’ and his deplorable middle class MP’s, just like the Tory party did to them in the late 1970 – early 80’s.

The particular cause and team that these people had for each other was the murder of our youth in the 1914 – 18 war and again in 1939 – 45, and they are no longer around, had they so, ‘Blair’ would have been booted out. Notwithstanding, you have got many hundreds of UKIP party members who don’t believe that working class should not have a say in Democracy issues – FACT! You are a party for the business sector, and in the past would never challenge issues at local government “never’ wanting to upset the Tory or Libdem member.

I don't believe that I made any reference to the working classes or any other class. I was really just stating that people tend to stick with what they know. Lots of people vote Lib Dems because they always have, and perhaps their parents used to vote Liberal. I did for a while, for instance.

Lots of people vote Labour because they always have. Many people take very little interest in politics and have only the loosest awareness of changes that take place. The day to day humdrum of politics passes them by without any impact. This isn't a criticism, it is just that politicians don't excite people enough to cause interest. Many people still don't know who UKIP are, as amazing as that sounds.

I agree it seems we have a portion of the party that don't want to upset the apple cart too much with ALL the main parties. I also agree the party cares about the business sector. However I would suggest that is a good thing, as long as it isn't business over everything else. After-all a modern moden countries need business to provide jobs and prosperity to it's people.

I think the vote to stand in all constiuencies shows the party is ready to upset the old parties now and fight for ALL of the British people. The misconseption spread by the media, that UKIP is a clone of the Tories is simply wrong. Yes there is a portion of the party who would have voted Tory before, but that goes for all parties and more importantly people who didn't vote at all before.

I have to confess, I voted Blair in, in 1997. I believed all his lies, and I now want to do all I can to make up for that terrible mistake. UKIP is the only party that can give this country a fresh start.
