On a lighter note (or in my case heavier) What music do you have on while your sitting here reading the posts
Planet Rock, the UK's Classic Rock DAB Digital Radio Station. |

Black Sabbath at the moment.
![]() One good tip for everyone, whatever your musical taste, is to sign up to Last.fm. You register on the website and then download software (Windows, Mac, Linux, iPod/iPhone) to set up your own personal 'radio station'. For example, if you like the Arctic Monkeys, enter the band's name and it will play tracks by similar bands. You can skip tracks and rate them, thus customising your 'station' around your choices. There are band profiles and it also has a social networking aspect. I think it is a great tool for learning about other bands that play music that you may like. For iPhone users there is a Last.fm app in the AppStore (you need to be running version 2.0 of the iPhone software - upgrade via iTunes if you are on an older version). |

I'm listening to a cover of 'How Can I Tell You' (original by Cat Stevens) sung by somebody called Liz Durrett. I never heard of her before today, but I was searching YouTube for a video of the original song and came across this cover.
Oh. My. Word. It is so much better than the original. I defy you not to have a good old sniffle if you listen to it. The great thing is that it is legally downloadable from her website here :- liz durrett. Scroll down to the MP3 downloads section and fill 'yer boots.

Unionist just looked at last.fm looks as if it could be good for introducing other bands based on taste Vids as well
I would imagine when your feeling lazy just type somebody in and let it go The other thing I've been doing is storing as much of my music on a USB drive and then do a random mix and let it run and run, gets quite interesting when the mix is so catholic

I love to listen to music , but not background music and that is what it would be if I was reading or typing! I love Country music and Traditional New Orleans Jazz! Both a bit old fashioned I would think for most of the posters on this forum!

But if I could choose it would be Lumpy Gravy or We're Only in it for the Money by the Mothers of Invention. Before everyone's time, I suspect. |

I can remember "Weazels Ripped my Flesh" - great cover but an acquired taste which I still haven't managed to acquire

'Oh No' benefits from "conceptual continuity" as a slower version of it appears on Lumpy Gravy and a more complete live version appears on the Mothers' 1968 Ahead of their Time. The OCLT also reappears in another form on Roxy and Elsewhere as 'The Son of Orange County' - about Richard Nixon. Then there's 'Directly from my heart to you' on side one - a superb blues featuring Don Sugarcane Harris on violin and FZ himself just contributing a simple guitar riff under gorgeous soulful vocals by ex-Soul Giant Ray Collins... I do understand the urge that one feels - or used to feel - to return these unusual albums straight back to the record shop. I did so myself. But they get under your skin in the end. |
