I used to be and it formed part of the television aspect of my Film and TV History Module with the OU back in 2005. However it lost its beleivablity for me, I remember distinctly Dot Cotten proclaiming 'oh Nick you are a good boy' and thinking even the most forgiving mother would not say that and Dirty Dens return from the grave was equally impluasiable. Eastenders at its best has a realsim about it that one can see in the work of say a ken Loach in plays such as Cathy Come Home a play I also studied that year.

The programme Eastenders experienced a set back with the departure of one of its longest cast members, the actress Wendy Richards (Pauline Fowler) last Christmas.
They are lucky in having the hugely popular actress Barbara Windsor as a cast member. |

The fact they all speak English on "Eastenders" shows what a fantasy that programme is. I am surprised they haven't been had up on discrimination charges.

There are no east europeans as main characters on "Eastenders" (yet). Which means that the programme is not reflecting the London we all know. Which is the London we have now where Polish and Romanian can be heard spoken in up to half the shops and offices and in many streets. I have just been in two shops - in Morrisons the people behind me in the queue for the till were speaking Polish and in the following shop I went into I was served by someone who talked with an east european accent (probably Polish).
As I wrote the other day, a Professor who advises the Bank of England said earlier this week that yet another east european influx to the UK is on the way due to a decline in the Irish building industry (which many east europeans have been working in). |
