Why did you hate it so much SF?
I must admit when I first signed up I didn't use it at all for a year or so, couldn't see the point in it, but then one day it suddenly clicked for me and now I use it every day to say hi to my friends and family around the country and the world. Nothing bad has ever happened to me since using it (so far...!)
I was once on Myspace. That drove me nuts as well. I thought I'd better try Facebook as everyone else has an account and I couldn't say anything about it one way or another unless I tried it. I don't like it. Some people like it but it just doesn't fit the sort of person I am. I am a very reclusive, private sort of human and as my parents are both dead and I have only one sibling who lives in the same town as me and also hates Facebook, I communicate with him by phone and e-mail and this is fine. I am also a garden blogger and I find blogs to be nicer than Facebook. But if you like connecting and communicating then Facebook is great, especially as you say, for families and friends, provided you shut out all the nutjobs and predators. I'm just not a Facebook kind of person. I think it's vital to close your profile to all except those you want to communicate with in your family or circle of friends. Twitter is great for this too. I prefer forums, actually, to FB and Twitter but forums seem to be losing out to the more personal exhibitionism of Facebook and Twitter. Even Myspace has lost out to FB.
I'm glad I tried FB. Now at least I know what it's like and what people are talking about when they mention it.![]()
Fair enough SF, each to their own as you say. One of my friends has transferred his blog to Facebook which is one way of doing it. I used to write a blog but even though it only had a few subscribers was once invaded by a bunch of very angry people when I wrote about an incident on Big Brother in which one housemate called the other the N-word (in jest). I wrote that I thought the incident had been blown out of all proportion by the media but my god, there were complete strangers out there baying for my blood!
That rather put me off expressing my thoughts next to lots of personal information about myself and my family. Once you have the hang of the personal privacy settings on FB then that sort of thing should not be a problem.
Facebook is alright, just don't get hooked on it.
Anything I post on this web forum is my personal opinion only.
