Yes you can delete accounts but you must request a deletion. This then sends your account into hibernation for 14 days during which time you must not under any circumstances call it up or you will reactivate it. If you wait the full 14 days you will vanish.

Why did you hate it so much SF?

I must admit when I first signed up I didn't use it at all for a year or so, couldn't see the point in it, but then one day it suddenly clicked for me and now I use it every day to say hi to my friends and family around the country and the world. Nothing bad has ever happened to me since using it (so far...!)

I was once on Myspace. That drove me nuts as well. I thought I'd better try Facebook as everyone else has an account and I couldn't say anything about it one way or another unless I tried it. I don't like it. Some people like it but it just doesn't fit the sort of person I am. I am a very reclusive, private sort of human and as my parents are both dead and I have only one sibling who lives in the same town as me and also hates Facebook, I communicate with him by phone and e-mail and this is fine. I am also a garden blogger and I find blogs to be nicer than Facebook. But if you like connecting and communicating then Facebook is great, especially as you say, for families and friends, provided you shut out all the nutjobs and predators. I'm just not a Facebook kind of person. I think it's vital to close your profile to all except those you want to communicate with in your family or circle of friends. Twitter is great for this too. I prefer forums, actually, to FB and Twitter but forums seem to be losing out to the more personal exhibitionism of Facebook and Twitter. Even Myspace has lost out to FB.

I'm glad I tried FB. Now at least I know what it's like and what people are talking about when they mention it.

Fair enough SF, each to their own as you say. One of my friends has transferred his blog to Facebook which is one way of doing it. I used to write a blog but even though it only had a few subscribers was once invaded by a bunch of very angry people when I wrote about an incident on Big Brother in which one housemate called the other the N-word (in jest). I wrote that I thought the incident had been blown out of all proportion by the media but my god, there were complete strangers out there baying for my blood!

That rather put me off expressing my thoughts next to lots of personal information about myself and my family. Once you have the hang of the personal privacy settings on FB then that sort of thing should not be a problem.

Facebook is alright, just don't get hooked on it.

It's not a matter of criticism, it's a matter of there not being enough hours in the day. Back when the complaints forum was public threads were growing to several pages and often generating many additional complaints and counter-complaints.

Anything I post on this web forum is my personal opinion only.

Open a thread in the 'Announcements' section, which only mods can post on, and where an explanation is given whenever someone is banned.

How long would it take to simply write: 'Grumpy Old Man has been given a XXXXX ban for being a sock puppet of XXXXXX' ?

That's all I am suggesting. Surely that is not an unreasonable suggestion? Where in my post above did I "rant about fascist mods"? Why are you suddenly being so aggressive when I was simply trying to be helpful?
This seems to have been the start of Richard Allen's vendetta against me.

I note he still hasn't answered the questions I posed.

Could this be because he has no answer .....?

Well then, perhaps you should try to do your job in a fair way that does not give rise to complaints!!

Have you ever thought of that?

Or perhaps this is too simple and logical for you?

Let me be a mod and I'll happily show you how it should be done.

There should be a thread in the 'Announcements' section where the mods explain the reasons for their actions. Otherwise there is no openness, no transparency and, ironically given the name of this forum, no democracy.
A simple explanation sounds like a good idea to me. Another way of reinforcing what the rules are too.
