On 17 October 2007, 16-year-old Jonathan Matondo was shot dead in a Sheffield park.

On 18 October 2007, The Sheffield Star reported thus:

Robert Smith, of free community newsletter the Burngreave Messenger… describing the shooting as the result of ‘inner city internal warfare’… claims FOUR YOUTHS, ALL CARRYING GUNS, WERE SPOTTED WAITING OUTSIDE THE HOUSE AND ‘POPPING SHOTS’ AT ANYONE WHO LEFT.

On 19 October 2007, the 24dash.com web site reported thus:

TEEN SHOOTING: Boy shot dead "was churchgoer" - The Star

In the spirit of helping Jonathan's mother "find why this happened" to her "precious son", the 19 October 2007, 24dash.com report also said this:

One man, who lives in Rock Street, said he believed Jonathan was followed into the park... Another man who lives very close to the park and knew Jonathan said the shooting was related to gang rivalry between different postcode areas of the city. He said:

Resident Douglas Johnson said everybody in the area thought the death was related to drug dealing… Advice worker Mr Johnson said:

Detectives believe the assassination was THE ESCALATION OF A POSTCODE GANG WAR BETWEEN THE S3 AND S4 GANGS IN PITSMOOR AND BURNGREAVE - WITH DRUGS AT THE HEART OF THE DISPUTE.

Negus Nelson… was cleared of Jonathan's murder at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday.

JONATHAN HAD BEEN CARRYING A GUN ON THE DAY HE WAS MURDERED but when he was shot dead the weapon had vanished and has never been recovered.

Detective Superintendent Martyn Bates, who is overseeing the murder investigation, said:

A witness spoke of SOMEONE SEARCHING THROUGH HIS POCKETS AFTER THE SHOOTING AND REMOVING WHAT THEY BELIEVED TO BE A GUN… I hope others learn from what happened to him so that he and his friends are not just replaced by others wanting to get involved, thinking there is SOME GLORY TO BEING A GANG MEMBER… We are working hard to deter young people from getting drawn in and GOING DOWN THE SAME PATH AS JONATHAN.

Jonathan was shot at with two different guns in what detectives believe was an assassination organised IN REVENGE FOR AN ATTACK ON AN ALLEGED S4 MEMBER'S HOME THE NIGHT BEFORE, for which S3 was held responsible'.

So, one year ago Jonathan Matondo was a would-be priest, a "good boy", a "wonderful; funny boy who regularly attended church", "a very, very, very, very great person", "a precious son", and "a nice, gawguss, funny young lad".

With a bit of would-be rapper, MC, gangsta, solja and "true badman General" thrown in.

Yesterday he was just some "drug dealer... carrying a gun."

Let me tell you what Jonathan was most of all.

He was the son of a woman who "fled war-torn Congo for the UK when Jonathan was just two".

To enrich us lucky Brits with the multicult difference of her war-torn self and her war-torn son.

On 7 November 2008, The Times reported thus:

MATONDO WAS A KEY PLAYER IN THIS FIGHT. According to police intelligence and court records, HE WAS A FEARED GUNMAN AND DEALER, AND SOMEONE WHO STRUCK FEAR INTO OTHER TEENAGERS.

Sheffield's Youth Offending Service had him on its highest level of supervision, trying to get him off the streets and into a job, but to little avail. On the night he was shot, a youth worker was sitting with Matondo's mother in his home hoping that, just for once, he might keep his appointment.

THE POLICE, CHURCHES AND COUNCIL SLAPPED A GLOSSY PRETENCE ON THE TEENAGER'S DEATH. Whether FOR POLITICAL RESONS or out of deference to his mother's grief, MATONDO WAS PRESENTED AS A CHURCH-GOING BOY, whose family had brought him to England from what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo when he was 6 and WHO WANTED TO BECOME A PRIEST.

At the murder scene, a senior police officer told reporters THERE WAS NO GANG CULTURE IN THE CITY.

‘We have heard rumours regarding gangs operating in the area,’ he said. ‘However, GANGS ARE NOT PREVALENT IN SHEFFIELD.’

Privately, South Yorkshire Police officers admit that THE STATEMENT LOST THEM CREDIBILITY. IF PEOPLE HAD BEEN FRIGHTENED TO SPEAK TO THE POLICE BEFORE, THEY JUST LAUGHED NOW. The police, it seemed, could not see what was going on, so why should people risk their lives to help them?

Burngreave and Pitsmoor are on a steep rise north of the centre of Sheffield. At the bottom of the hill, THE CITY'S POLITICAL BOSSES SEEMED CONTENT FOR THE PROBLEM TO REMAIN AT A DISTANCE AND… ALMOST UNSPOKEN.

Sheffield promotes itself as ‘The Safest City’ in England and does not want that image tarnished… SO THE CITY PRETENDED NOTHING WAS HAPPENING AND THE GANGS PROLIFERATED. They boasted of their drug wealth, brandished their weapons and taunted each other on Bebo and YouTube.

Matondo features in several grainy mobile phone videos, including one of him rapping on the steps of the local magistrates' court… The gangs splintered, fought and killed… The S3s split into at least two factions and a prominent member, Brett Blake, 23, was stabbed to death on the dancefloor of the Uniq nightclub in June... The following month Tarek Chaiboub, 17, known as Terror Kid and also an S3 gang member, was shot dead on a summer afternoon outside a barber's shop... The murder weapon had been a pump-action shotgun, fired from close range and the investigation is focusing on members of THE BROOMHALL CREW, A LOCAL SOMALI-DOMINATED GANG…

Those at the sharp end are concerned that NOT ALL THE CITY'S POLITICAL LEADERSHIP IS ON BOARD. My attempts to speak to City officials involved in youth justice WERE BLOCKED and Press Officers said they WERE ‘UNDER ORDERS’ NOT TO GRANT INTERVIEWS. Paul Scriven, the Liberal Democrat council leader and parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Central, took two weeks to respond to calls and e-mails...

There are still important voices in Sheffield claiming that the problem is minor. There are only six gang members, says one leading light in the city; IT'S ONLY KIDS MUCKING ABOUT, another claims, and everyone maintains that crime is falling… But up on the Rec, a year after Matondo died, CRACK DEALERS ARE OPENLY PLYING THEIR TRADE.

As I said, Enoch was right.

To me, I couldn't care a jot if these "gangsters" (and I use the word loosely) want to kill each other. Let them as long as they don't bring in innocents. You might think that you are a big tough man and invincible but what you idiots always forget is that there is always someone bigger than you and when they come and slap you, you cower and **** yourselves. And then if you do manage to grow older without having been killed or locked up, you will realise what a waste your life has been, how meaningless it is, how pathetic you are. Very sad it is.

I used to say the same thing about football hooligans. If they wanted to beat the **** out of each other, let em. Heck, give them an arena, put it on pay-per-view and chuck in the odd weapon now and then.

However, as soon as they start affecting innocent people, then the full force of the law should be diverted from speed camera watch, onto their arses.
